Seriously though, I watched the first half of Red Bull-Villarreal, and the away side were a much better team overall. Yet I can't look at the scoreline and think "Red Bull don't deserve that"!

That's possibly because the defences used to be shite and they got better. Is this why you hate the Top 4, CL etc because they have good defending?
Try watching women's football or maybe lower division football. Defending's really shite there, goal fests all the time

Defences probably have improved, along with attacks becoming less creative or ambitious. I don't want to watch 2 teams trying to out-bore eachother unless i support one of those teams.

There's also a lot of the better teams resting or rotating their best players, which ruins the spectacle - all the English clubs do it, Valencia do it, I think Lazio did it as well. Werder Bremen rested Ozil in the first game, Roma left Totti out, etc. etc.

Even under Souness we would bitch fuck teams in the early stages, even without our best players. I can't help but be unimpressed by the English clubs in the last couple of years.

The likes of Everton, Fulham and Man City are still qualifying to the latter stages of the UEFA with relative ease and without comprimising their league positions. It's not pretty, but that's unfortunately the state of football in the EPL for the smaller clubs. None of them can afford to do a Newcastle/Leeds and end up getting relegated off the back of a few decent seasons in Europe.

We got relegated because we played in europe? We actually did better in the leage when we had a european competition to play in aswell, don't know why.
Anyway they're not qualifying with ease at all, what Man City did last year wasn't done with ease, they even went to penalties with a team called Midgyland, and All borg ofcourse. Their root to the quarters was the luckiest draw i've ever seen.
I just find it strange that as the premiership is getting "stronger" our waffa cup teams seem to be getting worse.

Not really, the clubs playing in this Cup are no worse than the likes of Bolton, Newcastle and us a few years back.
The format of the competition now means that it's more sensible to play these group games with weakened sides, because these are not do or die games so you can lose a few and still go through, all the while keeping your best players for the EPL matches.
It's not as competitive as it was when it was Cup format when every game was a knockout.

But Midtylland and Aalborg were decent teams last year. Scandinavian football is definitely below par this year, but they were and are decent teams.

Teams of that level must've improved 10 fold from just a few years ago then. I don't know why as they're still skint.

Re: Europa League Matchday 2
Both Midtjylland and Aalborg were unlucky not to go past their opposition. They could very well have gone through and danish teams in general has improved in recent years and the money has flowed in aswell. Don't forget that Aalborg got a draw at Old Trafford.Kimbo wrote:EMP wrote:Kimbo wrote:It's not about them playing weakened sides, we played with weakened sides aswell for various reasons. I don't know what you are saying in general is true but I figure it is a case of teams in bottom improving and just wanting it more which is sure to cause some trouble even against wealthier teams.

Re: Europa League Matchday 2
They have. Basically the biggest and most consistent teams in Scandinavia are FCK - the only Scanidanivan team to qualify for European football (correct me if I'm wrong) and Rosenborg. Midtjylland is a decent team that has a very good, but controversial academy. They attract decent players through their feeder club in Nigeria (Enyimba sp) I think. THey are essentially a young team. Aalborg too is decent and there are usually some Swedish and Norwegian teams knocking on the door of Europe. They are/were not as as bad as you think.

Re: Europa League Matchday 2
In more than 50% of the European matches this season (but it has been going on for longer than that) Dutch teams have managed to give away 1-2-3 points in the last 5 minutes, or even injury time.
Let's make it official : if you blow it in the last 5 minutes you've now succumbed to
The Dutch Disease !

Im not making excuses for them playing shit defensive football - you just seem to be under the illusion that Newcastle were some kind of Holland circa '78 reincarnate, rampaging around Europe smashing teams to pieces playing sexy football, and now sound like the grumpy old man reminiscing about the good old days.

Yep, gives us even more of embarrassing riches in attack.
We should set up an exchange with England : their second choice defenders for our second choice attackers.
....would make both teams a *lot* stronger

So any team that compares favourably to our shite waffa cup teams are as good as Holland 78? You know you're in trouble when you have to make a huge exaggeration to make your point.

Re: Europa League Matchday 2
Interesting games for the Italian teams tonight:
Lille vs Genoa
Fulham vs Roma
Lazio vs Villareal
I fear for Roma, they are too fragile. But these games are must wins for the Italians, the losers may not make it out of their groups...
