Brazilian League scandal Empty Brazilian League scandal

Post by Effenberg Sat Oct 17, 2009 8:01 pm

    From 101greatgoals.

Thursday night saw the conclusion to Brazil’s Maranhao State League second division championship season, with the final round of games delicately poised as the top two clubs - Viana and Moto Club - headed into their final match on the same points. Viana hosted Chapadinha (the sides were held to a goalless draw in their previous encounter earlier in the season) while Moto Club took on Santa Quiteria.

Both matches kicked off simultaneously, with nothing untoward until the final 35 minutes of the season. Then, with Viana already 2-up on Chapadinha, news filtered through that Moto Club were also in a leading position only for Viana to rattle off nine goals in nine crazy minutes to amazingly win the match 11-nil. It goes without saying that Chapadinha simply stopped playing football as they continued to concede goal after goal as one of the most obvious sights of match-fixing appeared to play out in front of the rolling cameras.

Poor Moto Club simply couldn’t outscore their rivals, although for the record they also romped to victory winning 5-1 including being awarded three penalties in the final eight minutes of the match.

Once the full time whistles were blown and Viana were heralded champions, Viana president Jose Carlos Costa went about trying to convince the media that what had just happened was completely reasoned and above-board.

Costa: “The result was normal… As Chapadinha took the third and fourth goal, and was no longer able to win, they gave up.”

Nevertheless, Viana have not walked away from the incident scot-free, and the president of the Maranhao Football Federation has committed himself to investigating the matter.

“I think it was a scandal. It is something that comes to disgrace Maranhao football. We all know that, under normal circumstances, the Chapadinha wouldn’t lose like that. I’m already drafting an ordinance, requesting an inquiry into what happened in Viana. Soon after determining what happened, we have the Justice Sport.”

Brazilian League is one thing, Maranhão state championship is another thing.

I didn't hear anything about that. I will try to find out what happened.

I don't spend much of time on the internet. That's why I don't post on here more often. Smile

States from the north east don't get much national midia atention here.

That was utterly completely ridiculous. Hope they do something about it.

BTW does anyone on here follow brazilian Serie A? I miss a thread about it. I won't create one because there are only nine rounds remaining.

I like the last 2 best. The one at 2'15 where the defenders almost have to back up to let him through & the keeper dives 5 mins early...and the final one where they hit the post first and you can almost see the defender & keeper sigh as they realise they have to pretend to stop another shot Laughing

haha every goal was fucking more than suspect totally ridiculous. I love the fact after not trying to stop the goal, getting out of the way and just not caring or seemingly alive, they appeal for offside after it goes in on the last one Laugh

Sheva, on a different note, how is the kid Coutinho shaping up at Vasco? Do you think he will be Inter-ready next season?? We could do with an understudy for Sneijder...

    @ bluenine

I think that he is ready for Serie A, but he is not ready for Inter. I think that he should be out loaned for a smaller Serie A club.

There's an investigation going on now. They said they didn't try to stop the goal because it was so dark that they couldn't see the ball. True story!

    Makes sense.

Tho maybe Inter will keep him in the squad as an understudy to Sneijder, and use him sparingly as we do with Santon & Balotelli.... they may not get much playing time, but they get chances to play at the highest level and that experience sometimes is better than more playing time at a small club.
