Incase you saw this news story and wondered whether it was April fools day, this is not exactly the Indian National league. Its instead a new 2 month championship that IFA are experimenting with, in line with the successful IPL Twenty20. They are autioning 6 clubs, all in the football-crazy state of West Bengal, with each club allowed to buy 6 foreign players.

I am not sure how they will make existing clubs give up their Indian players for 2 months to these 2 clubs, perhaps some kind of loan moves. Crazy stuff, but its kinda big for India to have likes of Cannavaro, Okacha, & Crespo playing in their clubs, even after their retirement!

Positive step for Indian football? Well, if they get traction and end up making the game more popular, than yes.

Cannavaro and Crespo join Indian League

Italy legend Fabio Cannavaro and Parma’s Hernan Crespo have confirmed they’ll play in the new Indian Premier League.

“I’m back on the field with the Indian Football Association, West Bengal ;-)” wrote the 2006 World Cup winner on his Twitter feed just six months after he retired.

Among other stars are former Argentina captain Juan Pablo Sorin, Nigerian Jay Jay Okocha, Robert Pires of France and England’s Robbie Fowler.

The Coaches up for a tender process over the next 10 days include Peter Reid, John Barnes, Tony Adams, Samson Saisia, Marco Etcheverry, Colin Todd, Teitur Thodarson and Milos Rus.

The PLS tournament begins on February 25 and lasts seven weeks. It will have six ‘icon players’ to be spread out between the six franchise teams representing the cities of Kolkata, Haldia, Durgapur, Barasat, Siliguri and Howrah.

The format will be of home and away matches for the six outfits. Four teams will advance into the semifinal league, which will also be played on home and away basis. The two top sides will clash in the final.

Crespo & Cannavaro get £90k per week!! And apparently its "so low" only because of the expenditure cap. There is too much money in India these days...

Hernán Crespo became the hottest property of the new Indian football league starting next month when the Argentinian fetched $840,000 (£536,000) in an auction of players and coaches on Monday.

Crespo was snapped up by the Barasat franchise of Premier League Soccer (PLS), which is modelled on cricket's highly successful Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament and scheduled from 25 February to 8 April in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal.

The idea of a players' auction was borrowed from IPL, whose success has spawned numerous franchise-based leagues in other sports across the country.

Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro went to Siliguri for £530,000, while Robert Pires of France (£511,000), the Nigerian Jay-Jay Okocha (£351,000) and former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler (£338,000) went to Howrah, Durgapur and Kolkata respectively.

Nice new earner for almost-retired big-name footballers.

Yeah, with a 6 week championship, thats all they will attract - old timers & out of contract players. I guess they are just trying to test the waters, and will expand the league if it catches the public's attention. But the way they are going about it, I don't give it much hope.

It's not the worst idea in the world - they would struggle to attract big names on long contracts, but they will for something like this. I predict they'll get Michael Owen next year!

I speculated on another thread whether we might start to see more footballers take the route of people like Beckham & Anelka and move on from major leagues when they hit 30, to exploit opportunities in USA, China, India, Middle East where you can earn big money based on your name alone. Certainly it's going to be more appealing to many than becoming bit-part players or having to drop down to lower clubs.
