    Caborn eyes 'formidable' 2018 bid

Richard Caborn believes if the Football Association bids for the 2018 World Cup to be held in England it will be a "formidable" proposal.
The former Sports Minister is now an ambassador for a possible bid, which also depends on Fifa picking Europe.

"Prime Minister Gordon Brown said the FA will get full support," Caborn told BBC Five Live's Sportsweek programme.

"I think the FA will go for it and it would be a formidable bid. It could be a golden age for sport in Britain."

He added: "In one decade, we may see the World Cup take place on these shores six years after the Olympics."

However, Caborn conceded the campaign may not even get off the ground if a major decision by football's world governing body Fifa goes against England.

"Fifa will determine which continent the 2018 World Cup will go to in November," he said.

"We are hoping Fifa chooses Europe and we will be working hard to persuade the governing body.

"There has been an unwritten rule that every third World Cup comes to Europe."

South Africa will host the 2010 World Cup, while Brazil look set to win the rights to stage the 2014 event.

England won the World Cup as hosts in 1966.

Interesting. And close to Netherlands, would be like a home game for us.

And I can't resist: Trying to make up for 52 years of hurt? Biggrin

I think every major sporting nation in Europe has had it since we have in '66, so it'd be about time.

I honestly think England would be a good choice for the World Cup. It would almost certainly be a commercial success for FIFA which is always important for them. We've also got probably the best collection of football stadia in the world along with Germany, and with clubs like Liverpool planning new grounds this will only get better. We successfully hosted Euro '96 and as people have said it's about time we got to host the World Cup again.

It complicates the issue because then FIFA need to make two places available for the host nations. Both Scotland and Wales could improve the stadia on offer because they've got one or two great grounds. I think if FIFA were willing to have co-hosts then it would be worth a joint bid, but I'm not sure they would look favourably on it, so it might be best just making a solo bid for the competition.

With England to host the 2012 Olympics, which will probably be a success, i don't see why they won't get the nod over the likes of Luxembourg.

    ok

Just that the Millenium Stadium and Hampden Park are brilliant stadiums.

Probably as good as anything in England bar 2-3 stadiums.

We should do our best to ruin the party, just like you Englanders did in our case. We have influence, we should use it!

    ...

On the other hand, I really wouldn't mind to fly over to London for the final against you guys. Would be great actually...

This time however, with a different ending, 1996 was a good start. Smile

So which stadiums will be used if we get it in 2018?

    we'd need 10 right?

    Obviously

    Wembley
    Old Trafford
    Emirates
    Stanley Park

    but then

    London Olympic Stadium?
    St. James' Park?
    Stadium of Light?
    Goodison Park?
    Villa Park?
    Pride Park?
    City of Manchester?
St. Mary's? (don't laugh its rated as a 4 star stadium by UEFA and hasn't hosted England matches for no reason)
    White Hart Lane?
    Elland Road?

I suppose we'd want them to be geographically fairly spread out as well as being good stadiums

It's 1 stadium per city, except for 1 which can have 2(i think). So you could only pick 2 from London, or 1 if you want the 2 Manchester ones.

    I think this is right.

    New Liverpool stadium

If based purely on size, then the 10 stadiums should be:

    1. Wembley - 90,000
    2. Twickenham - 85,000
    3. Old Trafford - 76,000
    4. New Liverpool Stadium - 70,000ish
    5 Olympic stadium? - 70,000
    6. Emirates - 60,000
    7. St James' - 53,000
    8. Stadium of Light - 48,000
    9. City of Machester - 48,000
    10. Stamford Bridge - 44,000

Although I would expect them ot use Ellend Road and Villa Park.

Pompey's new ground isn't that big is it? thought it was only 35,000

No I don't think it's particularly big, about 36-38,000 but they normally like to see matches spread around the country and it would probably be fine for some of the smaller games in a competition.
