Teams for 2018? Empty Teams for 2018?

Post by Jaime Thu Jul 10, 2014 11:43 pm

Ok well, the WC is almost behind us and everyone but Germany and Argentina are a failure!

Anyone want to venture a guess at what your nations or some other nations team will look like in 4 years?

Don't worry it's not like anyone here will dig this post up in the future to point out how wrong you were.

We'll be shite, Hodgson will still be manager, we'll be debating over where to play Rooney and wondering whether to bring Gerrard out of retirement because he was so good for us. I would hope for something else ofcourse.

Volland and Durm are the only questions, the rest of our players are simply too good to get kicked out from new talented players, the injury prone schweinsteiger has a big chance of being dropped, we are well sorted in midfield

there will be still khedira, götze, özil, schürrle

maybe goretzka, can, the benders for the CM too, at least on the bench

In 4 years time he will be at Sunderland, guaranteed, along with Welbeck. Sunderland is the retirement home for Man Utd's bronze generations.

Impossible to say for Germany, too many variables until 2018 (Gündogan's recovery, Götze's development, new generation of players coming through etc. etc.). Making a prognosis for 2016 would be much easier.

Ranocchia is already pretty crap now, and he's already 26. Astori is more likely to start, but will also be interesting to see how Rugani develops. Juve should recall him once Barzagli retires.

I also think that Balotelli will be in the international wilderness for a few years.

Yeh, at least De Rossi, Buffon, Pirlo and Bonucci. Italian newspapers reported that he (and Cassano) spent most of their time isolated from the rest of the team. If the rest of the team doesn't like him, then it might be best to leave him out. He's not that great and there's plenty of other options in attack.

As mentioned, 4 years is a long span to make predictions, and in Italy's case it's also depressing as there are so few uncalled names of any interest or potential yet.
(yea Bonaventura, Berardi, Rugani, maaaaybe Crisetig... what else?)

So instead these are my canonical 23 to work with towards 2016:

    Sirigu, Scuffet, Bardi

    Darmian, Ranocchia, Chiellini, Criscito
    De Sciglio, Astori, Bonucci

    De Rossi, Verratti, Marchisio
    Candreva, Cigarini, Montolivo, Romulo

    Florenzi, Immobile, Rossi
    Cerci, Destro, Insigne

Feel free to replace Destro and Insigne with Blewitelli and El Shahahaaarawy if they happen to find some spine in their closet.
For 2018 kick out Chiellini, De Rossi, Candreva, Cigarini, Montolivo and invent somebody to replace them with.

Team I'd like to see at 2016:

Forster/Hart (Hart has been absolutely awful at the 2 tournaments hes played in)

    Walker/Clyne Caulker/Stones Cahill/Jones Shaw/Gibbs

    Henderson/Ward Prowse Wilshere/Huddlestone

    Barkley/Ox Lallana/Hughes Sterling/Townsend

    Sturridge/Welbeck

Post by blutgraetsche Sat Jul 12, 2014 6:17 pm

In Germany's case, a lot depends on how the new generation of players coming through, e.g. Meyer, Brandt, Werner, Gnabry, Goretzka etc., is going to develop in the coming years, not to mention the already (more or less) established, but still rather young players like Götze, Draxler, Ginter or Durm . As I wrote earlier, it's much easier to predict the 2016 team as I don't expect too many changes by then. In 2018 however, the likes of Lahm and Schweinsteiger are going to be rather old, although I can see Lahm still playing an important part then, similar to Maldini for Italy. Schweinsteiger is too injury prone to be a guaranteed starter by then I believe.

Another factor is Gündogan. Will he reach his pre-injury form again? Will he actually be able to play football on the highest level at all? In top form, he is one of the most complete midfielders in the game and for me a guaranteed starter, for club and country, but nobody can say if he'll reach that form again.

Prognosis for the 2016 team, if everything goes well:

    -----------------Neuer------------------
    Lahm-Boateng-Hummels-Durm
    ------------Schweinsteiger-----------
    --------Kroos-----Gündogan--------
    Götze----------Müller-----------Reus

It seems to be the case but it might just be because I no longer follow the Dutch league.

Yes, many people think the squad these days consists of computer generated names. But Holland cant sign the bigger talents from abroad, so this doesnt make the league better either.

But, there might not be a next van Persie in them, but on the other hand, I prefer teams where the average level is more or less the same, rather then have 1 or 2 superstars in your squad and the rest below average. Those players fail most of the time anyway, and makes you look like Sweden or something. And look how well the Fey-jugend did on this WC a cunthair away from a final. Nobody expected that.

Also..if this was 1994 and I would name the Dutch 1998 squad, people would say the same..so only time will tell.

Who said Italy will get better? The "conveyor belt" has been broken for a while now.

    As for Ranocchia, two reasons:
    1. Hope. There is always hope.
    2. Lack of alternatives.

There was a time when Ciro Ferrera struggled to get into the Italy squad. That time is long gone. A young Ciro would waltz into this current Italy side. Ranocchia is what we got. He may even end up becoming Inter's captain next season, lets hope he starts living up to his price tag soon.

Why not bring beckham back for the right wing?

Also milner, cole, and richards are a bit short.

Chris smalling and martin kelly are both tall enough for the right back slot, Luke shaw is pretty tall as well. Ryan shotton is another, he can take milner's place.
