Playing £15 million then would be like spending £30 - 40 million now.

That is not true.... Buffon was bought by Juve for more than that, and he was one of the best purchases I have seen in europe this decade... it was a bargain, more than worth it. If Juve knew just how good he will turn out to be, they could have been justified to pay £50M for him then - coz Buffon was easily worth more than Zidane then!!

A great goalkeeper is as important as any player in the world.

You can't predict that he will be the best or one of the best for the next ten years, because there is always new talent coming up. And there is always the risk of injury, Cech is actually a good example for this.
Kahn in his 2001-2003 form was a keeper not of this world, for example, who could win matches on his own. Still, he couldn't keep that extremely high level up forever.

I can name you 5-10 goal keepers in the Bundesliga alone who would be dirt cheap in comparison, and only slightly worse (or as good, not exaggerating), but don't have the name (yet).

No sure that Tevez has justified at 27 million although he would be close, and the inflated market at the moment is making everyone's price higher.

would be worth it as they win games on their own, then a few like tevez, villa, rooney etc might be worth a gamble to make up the 10.

I definitely wouldn't pay 27 million for a goal-keeper. It might have worked out for Juve paying 32 million from the money they got from zidane, but chelsea did much a better deal with cech at 7 million.

Yes, Shearer was one of the best. If we were to spend a massive amount like that again it would, again, have to be one of the very best.

Defenders are really under-rated I think, if we didn't have Carragher or Agger and we were in desperate need of a quality centre back then I wouldn't mind paying 27 million for the likes of Terry, Puyol etc.

Would Real Madrid have won La Liga or finished in the top 4 in the last 3 seasons if they didn't have Casillas in goal?

A world class goalkeeper can make a big difference to a team, especially in cup competitions.

Attacking players win matches, defensive players prevent the opposing team from winning matches, that's why attacking players are worth more.

I didn't question the importance, I questioned the price. And Buffon is an absolute exception, as you should know yourself. How many top class goalies have actually left their teams for a very high sum?

Besides, goalies tend to stay at one club for a long period of time, and don't change their clubs as often as field players do. The "market" is simply a completely different one, if you can actually call it that.

barcelona got a great deal, he's worth far more, arsenal would have asked 30 million of liverpool, but they preferred selling him outside england and henry wanted to go so they let him

You don't seem to understand what I'm saying. Of course good or excellent goal keepers are very important for a team, I never questioned that. But the market for goal keepers is very different to that of field players, especially attacking players and strikers. Clubs willing to pay £30m for a goal keeper are an absolute exception, that's why it almost never happens.

Age is a big factor 110 , Henry has probably 2 seasons at the top because of his style of play.

Eto'o, Kaka, C. Ronaldo, Messi, Tevez, Rooney, Cech, Ronaldinho.

Thats all I can think of for now

Deco? bit old to command a £27m+ fee.

Cambiasso could maybe be worth that much as he has a few years left in him still

We had a choice between tevez, torres, eto and villa

each one costs 25 million plus

torres is either the only one we could realistically sign or the one rafa actually wanted

either way spending 26 million on him is much better than spending 16 million on a lesser quality target so im happy
