200 Million Euros For Lyon Empty 200 Million Euros For Lyon

Post by Batman Tue Apr 03, 2007 1:33 pm

Lyon coach Gerard Houllier will be given an astonishing 200 million euros to rebuild his side next season.

The French champions no longer look the invisible force of old, experiencing several wobbles in Ligue 1 and having been knocking out of the Champions League by AS Roma.

"We are going to bounce back," president Jean-Michel Aulas told Le Progres.

"We are already looking ahead to next season. The budget will be bordering on 200million euros and we are studying a certain number of trails as we look to reinforce.

"We are going to allow two or three players who are being demanded by big clubs to leave, and we will replace them with other players within a very precise framework."

Gregory Coupet and Juninho are in talks over contract extensions, but the highly coveted Florent Malouda and Eric Abidal could be the players Aulas will let go.

Lyon were beaten 1-0 by Bordeaux in the Coupe de la Ligue final on Saturday.

That will be it for Ligue 1 I think , nobody can come close to Lyon now and after spending all that money , the competition for the title would be over as soon as it begins.

Lyon too is building a new stadium (80000).Lyon is almost sure to play the CL for a long period and their fans base is growing years after years. The problem is that England have 65m people and they have to choose between 4 big clubs..In France there are only 1 big club at the moment ands we have 65m people too...So believe me in the next 5 years Lyon will be as rich and popular as Liverpool or MU. <Ale>

Lyon will have a 60 000 seat stadium, not 80 000 (which is Marseille)
200M is the budget, not what they will spend.
That's almost sure now that the two guys who will leave are Abidal and Malouda. In fact they have this in mind for quite a while now, therefore they aren't playing very well.
They have already replaced Abidal with an excellent player, Belhadj, unfortunately this guy lacks experience at the highest level. The name of Robben is thought to replace Malouda, but i doubt this happens. Lyon needs a striker, a decent one. Anelka could be a good option. Each time the president says a wold class player will arrive but at the end, it always the same thing. The problem is that the league 1 is crap. Clubs like Paris, Monaco and Marseille have to do something in order to stabilise themselves otherwise it's going to be one horse race for the next 5 years.
Lyon also needs a more competitive league to do better in the champions league.

Excellent point. I've said the same about Bayern and die Bundesliga myself repeatedly, so I wholeheartedly agree. It's never good for a league to be dominated by one team. And it's not good for the team itself either.

I've seen this Belhadj guy.he is a winger not a DL.Seems very technic. For LB Lyon have Berthod...

For the rest I agree with some points (Paris,Monaco and marseille are sh!t)and don't about some others (Ligue 1 is cr!p)ect ect. When French clubs will have the same numbers of clubs involved in CL as the english, spanish and italian and when as them our clubs will be proteted in CL then "we" will have better results. At the moment it's a joke.Still think the fact Lyon is the only great club in France is more an advantage for them than a problem. <Ale>

Let's just hope next year Paris (because I'm sure they will stay up) with Le Guen, Marseille with Emon, and Monaco with ??? play the first role so that the League 1 looks more decent. I'm sorry if Sochaux plays the champiosn league next year they will get destroyed badly. I would rather have Lens instead or Bordeaux. I don't think it's a good thing for Lyon to playing in their own league, it's getting rather boring at the end.

Yeah but how do you want Paris,Marseille and Monaco to play the first roles considering they can't keep their best players ? If a PSG player does a great season a big club will try to sign him and we will lose him after 1 season!

Look at Ribery last year..It was amazing. He signed for Marseille last season. Was bright and played the WC...he was very good and he said to the french TV:"I want to leave for a bigger club"

It was amazing...in live on the biggest french channel he said that! Then after some strange negociations he decided to stay one more year.It a perfect example to show you it is complicate for "big french clubs".They have to rebuild their team every year...Only Lyon seem to have the secret. They will sell Abidal and Malouda but i'm sure they will not be so inferior to the actual team next season.

that plus that they have had a team without stars for some years and when they do sell one of the big players its for alot of money. so they keep making money. the problem is that i dont think they can get to a higher level then what they are now.

True, good point. For Lyon to take the next step, they need to keep their key players, they need to transform from a selling club to a club that keeps its players and attracts new (foreign) talent.

Having millions of Euros on the bank won't win you a CL title.

Well, actually they did buy Sonny Anderson for 10 millions pounds a few years ago, when 10 millions was quite a lot and when prices were not that high. I think Lyon is a bit like Arsenal, they will buy cheap and make huge profits. I still believe they can attract good players. What happened last summer is that were on the verge Camonaresi and Trezeguet and things changed because D.Deschamps blocked the transfers. Same happened with Ribery who said he wanted to join them but again the Marseilles president refused to let his player go to Marseille's main competitor.
As the gap is also getting bigger and bigger between Lyon and the other clubs, these latter are giving more trouble to Lyon to buy their best players.

I just hope Lille doesn't qualify for the next champions league so that Lyon buys players like Keita, Bodmer and even the coach Puel.

Another problem regards to signing big players also occurred in winter, Lyon wanted to buy a decent striker, but none of the wanted ones where able to leave they club like that- that is in the middle of the term.

Because Lyon won't be able to attract names such as Drogba or Etoo, it should look around and see who's often on the bench (Milan, Bayern, Inter...) and who would rather have more plying time.

Unlike Arsenal, they will have a transfer envelope of around 35 millions euros plus an extra 30 millions + with the two sales of Abidal and Malouda. So let's say 65 millions, which is enough to buy three very decent players.

But quality strikers don't need to be big name players...yet.

Lyon might not be able to get Drogba now, but they could've and that's the important thing to remember.

There are plenty of quality strikers that would jump at the chance to play for Lyon.
