You are right DD but its the new Maradona so everything he does is going to be overhyped anyway.

    @DD

If you're a high profile player, every little thing you do gets completely hyped up. Messi along with Rooney and Ronaldo are the most high profile young players around. So anything they do, will be branded as the best ever.

In the world cup low profile players did some of the most amazing tricks and no one ever mentioned it, never mind replaying it.

Its the way it works and Messi's goal is indeed overhyped now, just like his last one against Getafe. Talking about great goals by little cheating Argies, Agueros goal yesterday was sublime.

Where you are totally missing the point dude, is the occasion on which the goal is scored... Scoring a goal like this in Copa semis is special, in a FA cup tie - less special. Also re Messi, its the regularity with which he does such spellbinding stuff... after so many brillaint runs in this championship, he scores a goal like that, its a classic finale... its not just the goal why people are raving about Messi, its the goal after the way he has played in a championship like Copa America.

Blue9 the goal was vey special and I dont want to appear to be belittling the goal, but to start a debate about whether it is the best goal you have seen, is simply ridiculous. If he scored that goal in a world cup semi final against a good team, then you could probably understand the hype. The occasion was big, but not that big.

It is true that everything high profile players do is overhyped. I know it wasnt as good, but did anyone even mention the Chille players (in fact does anyone even know what his name is?) chip against Brazil, of course not because he isnt high profile.

Yes he seems to do something amazing every few games at the moment: a sign of a true great imo. But the best goal ever, do me a favour... The thing about messi is that he will probably do something even more ridiculous in the final. Any top player can do such skills and most will score 1/2 such goals in their career. By the time messi (and maybe aguero too) has finished playing he could have scored 100 such goals, that is what the hype is about...

If a Brazilian or Argentinian had done that in such an important match, against such a strong team, he would have God status. When a German does it, it's a 'fluke'... Wink

    Lars Ricken...legend!

if you watch that in slow motion around the 1 min 20 sec mark it looks like he has tried to blast it and got it wrong then the ball looped over the keeper into the goal

in any case it was not a chip as it was not hit in that way when you chip someone you kind of have to scoop it from underneath (and it's not a lob either)

IMO Copa America isn't that important. If it was really important, Kaká and Ronaldinho wouldn't have refused to play the competition and several argentinian and brazilian players wouldn't have snubbed the competion in the recent past. Now Argentina are desperate to win an official trophy after 14 years and decided to send their best players, but that doesn't mean that competion is really important.

that's right. Our FA used to send State teams (best players of one state only) to represent Brazil.

Mexico hit the bar from a freekick!

Referee gives a penalty and a red card to Lugano. Can't see what for at the moment.

    edit: Penalty converted by Blanco.

That was never a sending off or penalty. I can't believe the referee has given that. Mexico deserved a penalty earlier in the game so that evens out, but losing Lugano was harsh.

Bravo scores a second for Mexico! Forlan gave the ball away and Bravo drilled a shot from range into the corner of the net. I'm not sure why Carini was so far off his line though.

What a strike! Guardado hit an absolutely stunning shot that cannoned off the bar and although it bounced back out, it landed inside the goal. Carini was slightly suspect again in my opinion.
