Craig Gordon set for £9m Premiership move Empty Craig Gordon set for £9m Premiership move

Post by Cesc Soler Mon Aug 06, 2007 11:36 am

Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon has been given permission to hold transfer talks with Sunderland and Aston Villa, BBC Sport understands.
Sunderland boss Roy Keane has rekindled his interest in the Scotland goalkeeper after having a £5m bid rejected by the Edinburgh club last month.

Aston Villa also want to take the 24-year-old to the Premier League.

A £9m transfer to either of the English clubs may be concluded before Monday's Edinburgh derby at Tynecastle.

The Edinburgh club's majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov has indicated he would be willing to sell Gordon if the player said he wanted to leave.

BBC Sport understands Gordon is holding talks with Keane, and Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill.

Speaking last week , Gordon was reluctant to comment on the transfer speculation.

"The club hasn't told me what kind of figure they want for me, but that's up to them," said Gordon.

"I'm the captain of this club and with that comes responsibilities. I can't take my eye off the ball. I need to concentrate fully on the job."

Stevie Banks, who has been Gordon's understudy for the past two seasons, is expected to play against Hibs.

    ===============================================

That will break the record for the price paid for a British goalkeeper. Whenever I watch Scotland in Internationals he has always impressed me, so taking the step up from the Scottish League to the Premiership shouldn't be a problem for him. He was one of the goalkeepers along with Artur Boruc and Shay Given that I wanted to replace Jens Lehmann at the end of last season.

The Martin O'Neill factor will probably make him choose Villa. <Ale>

Sunderland's need for a keeper is far greater. Sorenson is hardly a bad keeper.

Still more likely to choose Villa though.

He's a good keeper...but he's taking shots from strikers like Alan Gow every week. Wait for him to actually play in the Premiership before saying he's better than Green and Carson etc...

yeah sorensen's decent. but he is injured at the minute and his contract's up at the end of the season. taylor doesn't inspire me with confidence, so moving for a young long term keeper solution makes sense.

agree with everyone saying 9m is crazy though. mind you, it's a bit unfair to compare it to the price of signing cech from a french club 3 yrs ago

    Didn't realise Sorenson was injured.

Maybe you can get the deal in installments, £5 - 6 million with the rest on add on's would be a decent price.

Well he is not worth £9m, but you could look at some of the transfers that have happened this Summer and say that most of them are not good value for money.

But he does have great potential, not many goalkeepers keep a cleansheet vs. France especially with a defence that doesn't have reknowned World stars. He was brilliant vs. Italy as well a few months ago and was only beaten by two World Class goals by Luca Toni.

I agree that £9m is a little too much but he is a very good keeper and will more than be able to hack it in the Prem. I don't think your a bad keeper if you can do this:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHuEWaKJz7A

Unfortunately, I think he'll choose Sunderland purely for personal reasons, not too far to travel from Edinburgh plus his family and childhood sweetheart are all there. Also a quiet man whose not interested in the high life as such. But hopefully he'll come for footballing reasons cos we do have a lot better prospects of progression than Sunderland.

Villa and Sunderland both have money to splash but £9m is a lot to spend on him.

£9m is a bit over the top, but if he was English he would be their top keeper, not that there is much competition for that spot.

BBC is reporting that City are ready to bid £10m for Gordon to solve our goalkeeper probs.

Fucking hell thats a lot of money, but then again we have a lot to spend and he is young and very, very good.

one report earlier was saying he'd be at sunderland today and tomorrow, doing medical, checking out a training session & talking terms, etc. and then come to do the same with villa before he decided.

hope man city coming in for him (if its true) doesn't up the price further!

I think if we are in for him then we can afford to go for £10m and then knowing what Hearts are like they will ask for £10m+ from Villa or Sunderland.

I think £10m is an incredible amount to pay, BUT after thinking about it, when you consider that he is regarded as being one of the best young keepers in Europe and he is only 24 (important considering keepers can keep going for years and years ) then i guess its in keeping with today's market.

TBH i've always wondered why keepers cost much less than strikers. I mean they can win you a game just as much as a striker just in another sense.

Still its only confirmed that Villa and Sunderland have bid so i dont want to get too excited yet. He will make a good buy for one of the 3.

Here's why Gordon is leaving...he's scared that the chairman, Mad Vlad, will batter him too.

    A mediocre keeper IMO

Mad Vlad's doing great if he can get £10m for him

I think he's a top keeper. Much can be made about the standard of the SPL, but for me a good save is a good save, whether it be from Drogba or Gow. He's also saved Scotland on numerous occasions against world class opposition.

If he was English, people wouldn't be turning their noses up the reported 9m fee. Chopra 5m, Nugent 6m, Harewood 4m, Bent 17. Least Gordon is a proven international.

In terms of British GK's, I'd only have Cech & possibly Given over him. But I think he's better than Given anyway, though I can understand why others would beg to differ.

Green is never in the same league.

So what has Green done to be considered a better keeper? Gordon has been performing to a high level for about 4 seasons now, and has attracted interest form several European clubs in past seasons. Even Buffon spoke very highly of him after the Italy game.
