very very very odd choice for Chelsea.. IMO Alves seems pretty much the opposite of a Chelsea defender. Not too strong defensively, but loves to dictate play and is basically all over the pitch: central midfield, support striker, striker, left midfield, right wing. Just doesn't seem tactically disciplined enough.

It was just saying that Kenyon met with officials from Sevilla in Madrid to finalize the deal. And then it also mentioned Robben going to Madrid after the Alves deal was done and the possibility of Cicinho ending up in Sevilla.

if we had signed alves i would have understood that cicinho going to sevilla but surely he will leave for roma. unless you mean that some agreement has been made between all 3 clubs to help different transfers.

I think the implication is that Sevilla will now need a replacement for Alves so Cicinho is the first choice.

That's a good point. I think that for Alves this isn't a very good career choice. His football will suffer from the restraints that Mourinho will put on him.

But for Chelsea, this is a great move. He's easily one of the best fullbacks in the world and he's on a different planet than Ferreira when it comes to quality.

According to Marca, the negotiations with Roma broke down yesterday. Roma wanted a one year loan with an option to buy but Real Madrid only want to sell.

I do, but he may not be the type of RB you need, if you buy him for that position that is. Alves is too attacking for the RB position in a 4-3-3. In a 4-4-2, he can be immense though.

It remains to be seen if he can be as effective in the EPL though.

I don't agree with all this talk he isn't suited

    What are chelsea's weaknesses ???

The answer is attack, width and creativity

Alves will add all of this

    What is chelsea's strength ???

Defensive stability. they still have 3/4 brilliant centre backs and excellent defensive midfielders. Alves is no worse defensively than anything chelsea have had over the past few years at right back

This move is EXACTLY what chelsea required

Of course Chelsea can give him more than enough defensive cover, in the right system (4-4-2 IMHO). However, it remains to be seen if Alves can be as effective in England as he was in Spain. He may not get that much space on the island, space he needs. Not even mentioning the much more physical nature of the game.

In fairness if we play like:

    -----------------------Cech

    Alves--------Carvalho-------Terry--------A.Cole

    J.Cole---------Essien---------Mikel-------Malouda

    ------------Shevchenko------Drogba

    It would be amazing.

Alves can overlap on the right, whilst J.Cole tends to cut inside. On the left Malouda is an out-and-out winger so he can provide the width there, whilst the defensively excellent and offensively poor A.Cole tends to stay back - when necessary tucking in to form the 3 man defence while Alves is rampaging. The central midfield is very solid defensively and offers some drive through Essien and tempo dictation from Mikel.

Shame we will never play like this.

Maybe Alves can take our free-kicks though, we desperately need someone who can.

Good signing for Chelsea - was the one weak area of their squad. Alves is a vast improvement, and young!

Should also fit well into Chelsea's new attacking style

not sure about that. sevilla want to buy cicinho or Nelson from benfica. but i think he can his place in the team from them because alves was a player that was key and one of the few who didnt get rotated that much. that will prob change now so hinkel should get a chance to prove his worth.
