German Teams in ECL
how will they do? with germany continuing to fall in uefa rankings, and with stuutgart beaten 3-1 by hartha today an inconsistant schalke and werder beaten 0-4 by bayern today. will the germans continue to fall in uefa rankings can they even manage to get a team out of the group stages?

Re: German Teams in ECL
all of their teams going into the UEFA cup might do their rankings no end of good. I don't expect anything beyond the first KO round for them in any case.

Re: German Teams in ECL
I think it will be tough for any to progress to be honest. I would imagine that they will all be low in the rankings so they will almost certainly be drawn with at least one and probably two top sides. Stuttgart and especially Bremen are suffering from injury problems which will hamper their efforts, and I'm not sure if any of the teams have big enough squads to cope with both European games and the league. Bremen would possibly be best placed if in good form, but they are suffering the most from problems and are not guaranteed to even be in the draw. Hopefully they will do ok, and of course it depends on who they get in the groups, but it will be tough for them.

Re: German Teams in ECL
We'll have to see what shape their squads are in when the CL starts. To be honest, I don't expect much from this lot, but you never know. If teams live Monaco, Porto, Arsenal and Liverpool can make it to finals, then why not Stuttgart, Schalke or Bremen.

Because they're not as good as Arsenal, Liverpool, Monaco or Porto.
Those teams may not have been the best in Europe but they weren't exactly bereft of talent either!

Well Stuttgart, Bremen and Schalke are not exactly devoid of talented players.
I stand by my comparisons.

Re: German Teams in ECL
Ok, but bear in mind that the Porto squad had some great players like Ferreira, Carvalho, Deco, that Brazilian kid Bremen have just signed, + many others...., Arsenal had the majority of the players from the unbeaten season then minus Vieira and Liverpool had some class players like Alonso, Gerrard, Carragher...
People say that Arsenal had an easy run to the final, but we faces teams like Real Madrid and Juventus along the way; a very good Juventus team as well, with players like Buffon, Thuram, Zambrotta, Cannavaro, Vieira, Emerson, Nedved, Ibrah, Trezerguet, Del Piero...

Even a 2:2 draw would have been more than enough, Zagreb would have had to win 4:2 to advance. Not exactly "barely".

Thank you Deisler. I seriously hope you take the UEFA Cup seriously, and do some serious spanking. The Bundesliga really could do with the points, and you could 'warm up' for the CL next year, where I expect you to be very strong again, been a while.
Let us wait and see how our group will look like. Now that we are in pot 2, we should avoid a group of death like last year at least. Advancing to the second round should be the minimum goal.

Considering all our injuries that´s a fantastic achievement.

Well done Bremen...fly that flag!
It was a struggle though. After the first goal it was all Zagreb. Much better from Bremen in the second half. Diego is such a talented player, I love watching him on the ball.

Re: German Teams in ECL
Tough groups for the German teams in the CL this season, especially Schalke's group is extra tough.
Group B:
Chelsea FC
Valencia CF
Schalke 04
Rosenborg
Group C:
Real Madrid
Werder Bremen
S.S. Lazio
Olympiakos
Group E:
FC Barcelona
Olympique Lyon
VfB Stuttgart
Glasgow Rangers
Hope us to qualify for the second round, won't be easy though. Stuttgart have a tough job also. For the UEFA rankings, the best thing that could happen is the teams going out in the group stages, placed third, and playing the UEFA Cup afterwards.
Whatever, bring it on I say.

Re: German Teams in ECL
Lyon this year, at least so far, are not as strong as in the last few years. Stuttgart do have a chance, although their young team lacks CL experience, no doubt. But maybe that's an advantage even, as it was last year in the championship. Their 'carefree' attitude made the difference, they are very hungry and ambitious, have some class players, and have improved their squad this year even.
Schalke's group is the toughest, but I could see them causing a suprise as well. Valencia had an awful start of the season. Potentially, they are a deadly team, of course, but German teams usually do well against them. Chelsea are Chelsea, a winning machine and masters of grinding out results.
Schalke have fanatic fans, they need to win their home matches to stand a chance, I could see them pulling it off.
Don't underestimate Lazio, they definitely are not easy to beat, especially at home. We have a tough group as well, and have to regain our top form again to prevail.
