Serie A clubs agree on collective TV rights formula Empty Serie A clubs agree on collective TV rights formula

Finally, from 2010 the smaller Serie A clubs will earn some good money.

I am not surprised that some of the "non traditional" teams voted against the formula, coz 30 percent of the money goes on "history" and another 20% on number of fans. Its not the best deal, but its a step in the right direction!

Serie A clubs agree TV rights deal
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Serie A clubs have agreed on the division of pay-per-view television rights money after a marathon nine-hour meeting. The debate had threatened to cause a schism between the big sides and the smaller outfits that worried they were going to be left in a financially unstable position. The move finally passed with 15 votes in favour and just four against – Atalanta, Siena, Palermo and Cagliari. Fiorentina were absent from the meeting.

From 2010 Serie A will return to selling its pay-per-view TV rights in a package deal, just like the Premiership, rather than the current method where each club negotiates its own contract. The smaller clubs feared they would be given a very small slice of the pie, but the agreement will see 40 per cent of the money shared out equally, 30 per cent based on the history of the side and another 20 per cent divided up based on the number of fans. The remaining 10 per cent goes to the Government to help support sport in general around the country.

“The Presidents showed a great sense of responsibility, which was not easy,” commented Lega Calcio President Antonio Matarrese. “Our suggestions were taken to heart and this solution strengthens all of Italian football. This is still only a step, though, and not a finish line.” Palermo patron Maurizio Zamparini had been vehemently against the motion, calling Milan’s Adriano Galliani “the antithesis of football” and stating earlier this week than an agreement “would not be reached on Tuesday.”

The way the history of the club is analysed will be in three sections. The previous season’s table sees the top team given 20 points and the bottom one point, deciding where five per cent of the money is distributed. Another 15 per cent takes into account the placements in the previous five years and the remaining 10 per cent is based on “sporting tradition.”

Good decision. Its a pity its not until 2010 though as they really need the money now. How many Serie A clubs are still in debt?

Although I doubt they're in debt, I imagine that the demotion of 18 months ago seriously affected Jewventus' wealth.

The financial situation is quite healthy now, as compared to 5 years ago... the norms have been made much stricter, and all clubs have greatly reduced their expenses... if you look at their salary payments now, you will be shocked how efficient most Serie A outfits are.

This extra money will allow the smaller serie A teams to cpmpete with their EPL counterparts in attracting top talent. This is very good.

    Good move.

Looks like Milan and Inter will lose 12 million and 10 million euros respectively, which is really not that much.

    Juve will lose 20 though.

Fiorentina will probably pull in 19 million more than their current value. They will be the biggest beneficiaries of this move.

Which is always a good thing! Wink

I cannot understand Italian, surely this will change depending upon what results these clubs get in the next 2 seasons?

Yeah but those changes will be minimal. Actually, now given patronage and what not, a club like Fiorentina could compete financially with, let's say, Villarreal. I don't think that is out of the question.
