    LANDMARK CONTRACT

During an extraordinary session held today, the Real Madrid Board of Directors unanimously agreed to sign a contract with Mediapro for certain audiovisual rights to the First Team and Real Madrid Castilla until the 2012/13 season.

The Board of Directors analysed and evaluated various alternatives that the Club has been negotiating over the last few months for these audiovisual rights once the current contract expires. It was unanimously decided to accept the highest bid with the most solid guarantees.
By signing said contract, Real Madrid are guaranteed to earn more than 1,100 million Euros for their audiovisual rights over the next seven seasons, including the present one.

This is a landmark agreement for the Club as it constitutes the most important contract for audiovisual rights that any sports club in the world has ever signed.

Yes, pretty much. At Barcelona and some other places, they just call them "Barcelona B".

Castilla is Real Madrid B. Back in the day it was always referred to as el Castilla. When they got promoted to the second division, the took back the old name.

Which League do Barcelona B play in?

Is it run as two separate teams during the season, could Ronaldinho ever appear for the B side?

I know players are promoted from the B team to the real Barcelona team like Xavi, but are players ever demoted there.

You cannot demote players.. Players can move up for a limited period (before automatically being promoted) but you can never help the b team by playing a team players.

Barcelona B are in Segunda B, essentially the third division -- and they are in the relegation zone at that!

I am pretty sure that a player registered with the first team cannot play with the youth teams.

Although players that are promoted from B can be sent back there...I only say this because I remember when Van Gaal returned for his 2nd spell, he promoted Valdes. But for some reason Valdes threw a fit one day about not getting chances to play, and didn't show up for training...Van Gaal fined him and demoted him back to B for 2 months (or maybe 1 month, can't remember), and Valdes was hugely apologetic in an interview and said he'd be more humble and work harder. Glad that got sorted out!

And Jaime's right, Barca B are doing pretty badly right now in Segunda B...they have 1 win, 7 draws, and 5 defeats and are in 19th place. The bottom 4 get relegated.

Is that why players develop fairly later on at Barcelona, I know Messi could be an exception to the rule.

But didn't Xavi, Puyal and Iniesta have to wait until they were 19/20 before given a chance in the first team. As they are already playing regular football in Segunda B there is less urgency to promote them, unlike in England where if you are in the reserves you play in very poor competitions.

Yeah I guess that's a benefit, since they are effectively playing in a proper professional and competitive league, similar to English clubs loaning their young talents to Championship teams.

But the age issue is also because there's no age limit - players are given as long as they need (and want to stay) till they either prove they're good enough or there is a gap in the first team and they fill the spot effectively. So sometimes players like Verdu, Damia, Navarro, etc. who we have all let go in the past season, stay in the B team till they are 22-23. Others of exceptional talent, like Messi, are fast-tracked. A similar path is being laid out for Dos Santos, Crosas, Olmo, Marc Valiente, and probably Bojan Krkic.
