Well with Arsenal, they play with no wingers and a defensive midfielder giving Fabregas free license to roam where he likes - behind the strikers, beyond the strikers, outwide. Against us he was almost play as far forward as Adeboyor.

Spain won't build a team round him because they have the likes of Xavi and Iniestia. So if he did play he'd have to play alot more disiplined.

    Bollocks. Pure tripe.

Its not as though he's lazy or anything.

And I've seen him have plenty of good games for Spain anyhow, and not in nothing qualifiers but in major tournaments

Hasn't he only played in one tournament - 2006 World cup.

What games did he play well in?

He hasn't. He only started his first couple of matches in the World Cup instead of Xabi Alonso, I think against Tunisia, since then he has played 21 times. I, personally, can't remember any game in which he's played well.

Everything. He's played slightly more advanced since RVP has been injured, but apart from that he's generally played in a 4-4-2, which is strange, because you imply he'd have more work to do in the Spanish squad, despite the fact they have a dedicated DM then a further four midfielders; two of which are Xavi and Iniesta - ie central.

I don't know where Cesc played on Saturday, but I'm guessing, on the right wing. If that's the case then its no surprise he played poorly.

In a 4-4-2 without wingers. So he's effectively given free license.

What I'm arguing is if he came into the Spanish team, he'd probably fill Xavi's role long term and he'd have to be alot more disciplined to play that role.

He's always played down the middle (4-1-4-1), Iniesta played on the right.

he played centrally with Iniesta on the right-ish and Silva left side, just in front of Xavi and slightly further in front of Albelda

yeah, he did Ok, but defo no more than that. it was a variation of the Barça formation. suppose you'd say he played the deco role, but both he and Iniesta and Silva were slightly deeper, and the wider players were wider than they'd have been at Barça, especially, not surprisingly Silva

Albiol may also be in contention for a place. He's going through a rough patch, but he's definitely a superior player to Marchena.

If Vicente & Aragones kiss and makeup - then I could see him starting over Riera.

Against Sweden Cesc appeared to be 'in the hole' with Silva & Iniesta interchanging. As yet, Iniesta hasn't really played in his preferred role, but despite that he's still been very impressive. The Argentina performance from him, was one of the most dominant performances I've seen from a midfielder.

I'm not sure about Albiol, he plays well with an experienced CB alongside him but goes to pieces when playing with Marchena/Alexis.

re Inesta. I really dislike the way our best player is shunted onto the right. His off the ball movement down the middle is great.

The Vicente/Riera & Joaquin/Angulo paring will always be plan B. Tomorrow we'll have an idea if the tiki tika can work against teams that pressure well.

Don't forget about when he has to play with Helguera! Laugh It just depends on how many of each position Luis decides to take but I think Albiol has a reasonable chance of being among the last 23.

I would play Iniesta in the middle as well. I think you almost have to choose between Iniesta and Silva (unless Silva were to slide more out to the wing). Riera/Silva on the left, Iniesta+Xavi or Cesc in the middle, Joaquin on the right, and Albelda lying deeper, kicking the sh!t out of the other teams creative midfielders is how I'd do it.
