Euro08: Group of Death

Which 2 will qualify out of the top 4?? With 3 world cup quaterfinalists (including both the finalists), this was always going to be a tough group. The brave scots have made it even more interesting!!

Its very close as the competition nears half way, the standings:

1. Ukraine (12 pts from 5 games)
2. France (12 pts from 5 games)
3. Scotland (12 pts from 6 games)
4. Italy (10 pts from 5 games)

Italy are yet to play Faroe islands (safe to assume 3 points more at halfway stage) while France & Ukraine play each other.

Poland is the real group of death. Scotland will sink without a trace.

IMO the next game between France and Ukraine is going to decide a lot of things... anything less than a French win will put Ukraine in an excellent position to qualify.

Coz both Italy and France have to travel to icy Ukraine later in the year, and Ukraine will be expecting points from both those games. Specially the last game of the group when France travel to ukraine, France need to be ahead of Ukraine before that one. And Italy need to be within one point of the leader before the last games.

While I have little doubt that Scotland (inspite of their inspired play so far) will fall short, the competition in this group is between the 3 WC quarterfinalists. For Euro qualifiers, it doesn't get bigger than this, thats why this is the Group of Death. One of the world cup finalists could easily not qualify. There is little or no margin of error in this group between these 3 now.

France or Italy is a toss up! I go for France right now! For Scotland this group is a bit too good. Nevertheless, they are on the way back!

Because we dropped points to Lithuania at home we are in a trickier position than the others...who have all beaten them away.

We have to go away to Scotland,Ukraine and Lithuania...and are at home to France.

I think we'll get through but we have a tough test.

I voted for Ukrainia and France.

The Italy-France game will be played in September. As during the first leg, Calcio won't have started. So it will be a big disadvantage for Italy. I think they will repeat their bad performance of the begining of season : France 3 Italy 1, Italy 1 Lithuania 1.

I voted Italia and Ukraine...simply because I refuse to vote France and therefore even the Faroe Islands would get my vote before them

I think a lot will depend on the next games result between france and ukraine... if France don't win that one then UKR are favourites, and its between France and Italy for the other spot. If France win that one then they become favourites, and its between Italy and Ukraine for the second spot.

I hope for a draw or a UKR win

Funny that you are both for Ukraine. It would make more sense if you hoped for each other.

If Ukraine get through and it is between France and Italy, I can see it going either way. Both your best chances to qualify are if you are competing against Ukraine for the 2nd spot.
