Are Millwall and West Ham that different? Empty Are Millwall and West Ham that different?

Post by Knoblauch Thu Dec 06, 2007 9:30 am

With the thread about the best English teams, some showing Millwall as better than West Ham, and others showing West Ham as the better, maybe it's time for a comparison.

Well, really where is the comparison, West Ham are a team fighting for Premiership mediocrity, and Millwall are a small pathetic club in the lower reaches of the lower levels of English football. Both teams support comes from similar areas of London, and both clubs have been plagued by hooligan support, Millwall's is well documented, and West Ham's hasn't been slow in fighting at any oppotunity, indeed, a young lady, Cassandra Pennant, wrote a book about their gang, the Ice Cream Factory I believe them to be called

Yet surprisingly, we are able to compare the clubs this century.
They've played each other in 4 league games, resulting in 2 1-1 draws at the home of the Irons, and 2 Millwall victories, by 1-0 and 4-1 at the Lions stadium. So, Millwall comfortably win this comparison.

Both teams have made the play off's in the Championship, Millwall, who finished 4th, rather unluckily failed to get promoted, yet West Ham, finishing 6th, had the good luck to win them. Pretty even there.

Millwall also won the title of a lower division, as well as making the play offs, but thiis really counts for nothing when comparing to the Hammers.

This century both teams have had one surprising national success, making the FACup final, both failing in the final hurdle, losing to a big4 team, West Ham losing to what is generally considered to be the weakest of the big4, Liverpool, while Millwall had the missfortune to come up against probably the stronger of the big4 in Manchester United. Again, not much difference between the clubs there.

Having failed to win the cup, both teams entered the Uefa cup, West Ham losing both their games, while Millwall managed to win a point for the English coefficient. So, finally, there's a somewhat startling difference between them. Millwall have been better in Europe, for England than West Ham.

    err,

Difficult to make this comparison, as Rio Ferdinand was at Millwall before West Ham illegally offered his parents £100,000 to sign with them.

Are you sure it was QPR, if it was then Millwall had a schoolboy named Rio Ferdinand. Funny, what's the chances of that?

Rio Ferdinand was born in November 1978 in Peckham, South East London. As a young aspiring player he was centre-forward for his local junior team, Bloomfields, where he was reputed to have scored 30 goals in a season. Later he went on to Eltham Town as an Under-13 and Under-14 player. It was while he was at Eltham that he was spotted by a West Ham talent scout.
Ferdinand first signed for West Ham as a schoolboy at the tender age of fourteen. By the time he was ready to leave school at sixteen, he had been invited to join Middlesbrough, Norwich City, Millwall, Charlton and Chelsea. However, he remained with West Ham on a two-year Youth Training Scheme contract for the princely sum of £30 per week, and all the boots he could clean. Rio's attitude and ability clearly impressed West Ham, who signed him on his first professional contract at the age of 17 - he made his debut as a professional footballer as a substitute against Sheffield Wednesday at Upton Park.

did Millwall also have schoolboys called Joe Cole, Frank Lampard, Michael Carrick, Paul Ince, Tony Cottee, Alvin Martin, Trevor Brooking, Martin Peters, Geoff Hurst, Bobby Moore?

    According to wikipedia:
After initially being scouted at QPR, Ferdinand signed as a schoolboy for West Ham United in 1992 while a student at Blackheath Bluecoat school and became a professional player under their youth system. He made his first team debut on 5 May 1996 as a substitute in 1-1 home draw against Sheffield Wednesday. In the 97-98 season, Ferdinand won the Hammer of the Year award at the young age of just 20.

I can find no mention of him at Millwall, or Cole, Lampard or anyone good for that matter.

lol! Typical Joninho brilliance with that one.

Cas Pennant is a moron- making some money off his "hooligan turned author" reputation. Seeing as I'm sat safely behind my PC out of harms way, I have no qualms in saying the man is a Grade A berk <Ale>

Damn, that's something I totally forgot about, how some of the so called bigger London clubs fans refer to both Millwall and West Ham fans as Pikey's.

I wonder which was the first club to do that. My bettings on it starting with Tottenham fans refering to West Ham as Pikey's.

Now, I believe Millwall fans call Gillingham fans Pikey's. Mind you, so did Peter Crouch, who said there supporters looked like extras from the film «The Hills Have Eyes».

Another somewhat startling difference between the two clubs is that Millwall are in the 4th round of the FACup, while wet ham players and fans have a free weekend. Maybe they should get themselves of to Coventry, to watch some proper football.
