Post by EMP Wed Dec 19, 2007 12:08 am

I will be off to Rotterdam on Thursday. Now confirmed that I will be going to see Sparta v NAC Breda as well and hopefully Excelsior v Ajax as well as Feyenoord v Sparta.

Is the polic strike over yet and who should I look out for in the matches. Will look up previous thread for Feyenoord match, but update if you know anybody is definitely out. Would like to see something of Rotterdam while there. Interested in all sorts, especially cultural and historical stuff.

Are there any Asian origin players likely to play?

Jenever of course you are in Holland afterall. The English call it Gin..but its actually Dutch.

We had one in Ghana..but it didnt produced anything good to be honest. Lee is Cr@p and is homesick all the time, a typical exotic Feyenoord signing.

Does that mean it has closed down? How long has it been going and when would you expect to see results?

Do you prefer the Acadmeies or feeder clubs like Ajax have in South Africa?

Those feeder clubs dont work so well in Africa. I think Pienaar is the only one to have successfully been drafted into Ajax.

Why did Dutch clubs change their approach? Dutch teams seemed to have found talent in Suriname, even South Moluccan talent. Was the old system broke? What do the Academies & feeder clubs have that the old scouting ntork didn't?

Old system found Gullit, Kluivert and many others didn't it? How many were Dutch born?

We got him from Ajax, who in turn got him from Ajax Cape Town - who I think were a separate club from Ajax then.

He's been a good player for Blackburn, but was absolutely useless for us except in UEFA Cup games.

@ Rai: Wasn't there a white South African player who was high on talent, but short on discipline who came through from Ajax Cape Town, but went back almost as soon as got to Holland. Name escapes me though. Did any black players to play for Oranje come from former colonies apart from Gio and Seedorf? Were Davids and Rijkaard Dutch born?

Frank Rijkaard (one of the greatest Ajax players ever) was born in Amsterdam and Edgar Davids was born in Suriname same town as Seedorf, Winter and Jimmy Hasselbaink. I’m not sure of the player you mentioned don’t really keep much tabs on Ajax Cape Town. Unless they are highly talented any player coming from Ajax Cape Town may not get much of a chance breaking into the Ajax 1st team, youth players coming through the Ajax academy gets precedent.

Mainly local lads. Sparta is in Spangen (Rotterdam West) close to where I live. We have 160+ nationalities in our district (Delfshaven), would be more amazing if Sparta unearthed a Dutch player whose ancestors lived in Holland for more than 2 generations. Most of the 'non-caucasians' are from Surinam, Morocco & Cabo Verde (islands to the West of Africa, significant minority overhere, good footballers), few Antillians (they prefer baseball).

Most of the Surinamese players (apart from the few exceptions mentioned) are 2nd generation immigrants (i e born here)

Well we still have Delfshaven which wasn't destroyed by the bombing in WW2.

    Rotterdam Trip Delfshaven%201

It's very close to the towncenter. They also have the Gin Museum (Schiedam & Delfshaven make the best (& oldest) gin in the world). Good place to get warm.

Delfshaven is also where the Pilgram fathers (they stopped over in England to pick up a few more fanatics) left to found the USA.

Don't know what kind of stuff you want to see.

We have a very good modern art / industrial design museum: Boymans van Beuningen.

If I were you I first went to the Tourist information (they're located in the towncentre at the edge of the Beursplein square on the Coolsingel side, everybody can point you there), they can help you with everything

Trams are best for public transport (metro is ok too, but doesn't get you everywhere, they have a folder at the tourist office on public transport ).

Yeah, Delfshaven has quite some historical buildings..allthough a lot of those went lost cause the Allies decided to flat the city even a bit more Laughing

Boymans van Beuningen is a nice museum, named after a family that made their fortune by selling coals to Germany during WW1!

And you should check out the Zoo, its probably the best in Europe.
