EXCLUSIVE by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

TOM Hicks and George Gillett held a secret meeting with Jurgen Klinsmann to line him up as the next manager of Liverpool FC.

Hicks today insisted the talks would not have resulted in the immediate dismissal of Rafael Benitez and that Klinsmann was only "an insurance policy."

He told the ECHO: "We attempted to negotiate an option, as an insurance policy, to have him become manager if Rafa left for Real Madrid or other clubs that were rumoured in the UK press.

"Or in case our communication spiralled out of control for some reason."

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jesus, why on earth would you come out and admit this?

    1) You don't make things like this public whilst a manager is still in place
    2) Klinsmann my fucking arse, no one would want him at Liverpool, the American oweners are fucktards.

Whilst I'm having many doubts about Benitez at the moment this is truly shocking from Hicks and I wouldn't even be surprised if Rafa walked because of this

It's a bullshit explanation too, "if he left for Real Madrid"...yeah right, if Hicks had a clue about football he'd know Madrid are happy with Schuster and it's been a while since there have been rumours about any manager to Madrid.

He claims he was 'just insurance' I mean wtf, basically if we hadn't of qualified for the last 16 of the CL Klinssman could well be our manager instead of Benitez. I wish something would happen to put us out of our misery, either the American's bugger off or they finally just tell Benitez to pack his bags and line up a fantastic replacement

I think Benitez will leave after this...It's another Levy and Ramos situation, where the manager is being undermined by the chairman. If I was Benitez I'd quit...There's only one reason Hicks would talk about the job with Klinsmann, and that would be that he isn't confident with Benitez...

Im not sticking up for Hicks, who has been deceitful to say the least. But at least print the full extent of what he said.

"After George and I had our long and productive meeting with Rafa following the Man United match, we put all of our issues behind us and received Rafa's commitment that he wanted to stay with Liverpool.

"We never reached agreement on an option with Jurgen, and we are both pleased for him that he has a great opportunity to return to Germany and coach a great club team.

"Rafa has both of our support, and our communication has greatly improved.

"Foster, Rick Parry and Rafa now have regular meetings at Melwood on Monday mornings.

"The two families always try to have a telephonic meeting on Monday afternoons, so we all are on the same page. We all want to win more games."

    Irrelevant.

They effectively interviewed another manager whilst already having one,

Rafa's position is untenable in my opinion.

The owners know nothing about European football. In the US, when papers report that a player/manager is looking at moving to another team, its usually accurate. The player may not make the move, but there is always a concrete source that the player did tell someone they were thinking about it. This obviously isn't the case in European football.

The press here have to have a headline and most days there isn't that much going on so they make something up. Chelsea would have about 100 players if everything that had been reported in the press were true. Man U and Arsenal wouldn't have any as they'd have all been playing for Barcelona by now.

Perhaps it should go public like Man U before the Glaziers came in (saddling the club with huge debts). Why do you want foreign ownership of the club?

bizarre. certainly seems to say rafa's days are numbered, much like jol and mourinho before him. i think they'd be crazy to get rid of him now - at the end of the season, if they didn't win a trophy and ended up outside the cl spots then, yeah, there'd be a strong case for him to go, but he's surely earnt at least a bit of leeway with what he's achieved already.
