John Terry could be facing a battle with Rio Ferdinand for the England captaincy.
The Chelsea man had an impromptu meeting with Fabio Capello on Wednesday night in the directors' box at Goodison Park and, according to The Times, received no assurances from the new England manager.
Instead Capello just politely asked about his health, leaving Terry in the dark.
Ferdinand has been in astonishingly good form for Manchester United this season and his manager Sir Alex Ferguson is backing his claims for the skipper's armband.
"Rio wouldn't have captained my side if he wasn't capable of captaining England," Ferguson said. "I think experience is important in that role. Rio has more than 60 caps now, so he's got that experience.
"There are different types of captains. Rio is different in nature than a Schmeichel, Bruce, Robson or Keane. He'll lead more by example than encouragement, whereas the others were assertive. John Terry has got the position, so I don't think Rio will look upon it as the be-all and end-all, but if it happens, I think he will be happy."
Steven Gerrard also has claims on the captaincy as Terry's current deputy, but it is likely that Capello will delay the decision by giving David Beckham the captaincy for his 100th cap against Switzerland.
