With 28 points they need 12 more to secure safety. So assuming they get a few draws here and there - 3 wins should be enough.

    Man Utd. (h)
    Blackburn (h)
    Liverpool (a)
    Birmingham (a)
    Fulham (h)
    Tottenham (a)
    Reading (h)
    Portsmouth (a)
    Sunderland (h)
    West ham (a)
    Chelsea (h)
    Everton (a)

Of those - they should be looking at the home games against Blackburn, Fulham, Reading and Sunderland as winnable - and certainly i'd fancy them to win at least 3 of them.

They should also be able to get something from the away games against Birmingham, Portsmouth, West ham and Spurs - even if it is only 2 or 3 points.

Even then if they get nothing from the games against Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool and Everton - they should be fine.

I think they are in the same position as Fulham where this time last season when i said they could go down and i wasnt far off being right (if it hadnt been for Rafa picking a $h!t team).

Newcastle have got to beat Fulham, Reading and Sunderland cos if they dont i think they will be in the mix up at the bottom come the end of the season. They have got some great players but they have a $h!t defence and little confidence.

Its an interesting one this because its pretty much an identical situation to the one Saints are in at the moment. Low on confidence, off form (1 win in the last 10) - poor defence - but still a fair few points off the drop zone and...surely too big/good to go down...

That last sentence is the ultimate myth! We went down in 2003 with a team of:

    ---------------James-----------------

    Johnson---Repka---Pearce---Brevett

    Sinclair---Carrick---Bowyer---J-Cole

    -----------Di Canio---Kanouté------

No team is ever too big/good to go down...that's one thing I can say from experience.

    Their remaining games....

    Blackburn (h)
    Liverpool (a)
    Birmingham (a)
    Fulham (h)
    Tottenham (a)
    Reading (h)
    Portsmouth (a)
    Sunderland (h)
    West ham (a)
    Chelsea (h)
    Everton (a)

I think only three look really winnable. I think it will be very very close and they could go if a few of the other teams find some form.

I see 9 winnable games. We've already beaten 7 of those teams so far this season. I think we'll win atleast 3 and get 2 or 3 draws from the others. We can't beat the big 4 as we can't play containment football, we're very open, but the rest are nothing to be scared of and are certainly not good enough to be put down as certain defeats. In the 4 league games since Keegan arrived 2 have been against the top 2, after the Pool game i see a list of beatable teams and can't see us not picking up enough points.

they should be alright. it's just a matter of how long this bad patch goes on for. if they get to, say, the fulham game without a victory, then they really will be in the mix down the bottom.

i feel bad for keegan, in that he's inherited a team low on confidence going into a nasty spell of fixtures - but i really can't think of a manager whose had much of a worse start in terms of results. 2 home draws against teams you'd hope to beat and 4 defeats by 3 or more goals.

In general he's inherited a very poor team. Out of their entire squad Given, Taylor, Beye, N'Zog, Milner, Martins and Viduka are the only players I've seen who look half-way decent at this level (though I confess I haven't seen an awful lot of Newcastle). Given, Martins and Viduka also seem very injury prone this season as well.

Newcastle won't go down because the teams below are too awful - Fulham and Derby are already gone, and then the likes of Birmingham or Wigan will end up filling the last spot.

teams like birmingham and wigan are poor, but still capable of grinding out a win here and there - which newcastle need to start doing.

reading are clearly in trouble now though - they've plummeted and it's going to be hard to turn it round. although looking at their fixtures, they've still to play a lot of the teams around them

Look at the fixtures since Keegan took over.

Bolton at home(0-0) - KK was only here for 2 days
Arsenal away(3-0) - Were we supposed to win this?
Boro at home(1-1) - Ripped off by shocking refereeing
    Villa away(4-1) - Shocking performance
Man U at home - were we expected to win?

It's just unfortunate that KK arrived when we were hitting a run of difficult games.

You forgot Arsenal in the cup as well as the league. If you include the other game you have conceeded 16 in 6 games and scored just 3 since he took over, now i know you have played some good teams but thats awful. The fact you are getting hammered wont help your confidence either. I wouldnt put money on Newcastle to go down cos you should be able to get enough to survive but its not cut and dry and you have a lot of work to do to ensure you stay up.

don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming Keegan. I said already i think he's been unfortunate to inherit a team so low on confidence, in such a tricky patch of fixtures. the problem is getting the confidence back enough to get some wins in the easier fixtures you've got coming up.

If Newcastle dont win against Fulham, Sunderland and Reading they will drop cos i cant see them getting many points else where and these three would still leave them short of the 40 pts mark, although fortunatly for them i think the survival mark will be less this season.

LRDs bet of £20 at 20/1 for them to go down is looking like a good bet at the mo.
