Just because he has £20 million available doesn't mean he should spend it on large numbers of second rate players like Liverpool have done this year (Torres excluded although of course he cost more than £20m on his own). A team like Arsenal run on tight commercial lines can't afford to do that. We don't need bench warmers.

Arsenal run on tight commercial lines? Might I remind you that he signed Reyes for 17.5 million, who flopped and was sold on for a fraction of the price without the slightest criticism being aimed at Wenger? Might I also remind you that the Arsenal board have been saying that the money is there if Wenger wants it, that he is in no way tied to a small budget as a manager? And might I also remind you that compared to 99% of football clubs, Arsenal are ludicrously wealthy?

Once again, propaganda fails. The truth is out there.

Reyes didn't work out but not even Wenger gets it right all the time. That has no doubt made him more cautious. He has a budget but not the £50m that Liverpool and Man U have spent this year. Arsenal are wealthy because they have invested wisely in a new stadium and haven't thrown their money away on loads of second rate players.

Why do you insist on pointing out that Carrick didnt cost 18 million and then make exactly the same mistake with Reyes.

Besides, we're one of the largest clubs in Europe, its fairly obvious we will have spent some money at some point in the last 5 years. Rolling Eyes

I dunno, he still outlayed 5-12 million on Walcott and around 10 million on Hleb, and anything between 6 and 16 million on Eduardo, depending on which reports you read. They're big money signings - only one of the top 6 or 7 clubs in the country could afford to take that sort of risk. £ for £ he's an excellent manager, there's no disputing that, but to act as though he's working on a tight budget is highly deceptive to my eyes.

He has a budget but not the £50m that Liverpool and Man U have spent this year.

Liverpool, sure, but Benitez hasn't had 10 years to set up a teenager scouting network like Wenger has. Maybe in another 6 or 7 years (if he's still there, which is unlikely) we'll see a similar kind of situation there. And Man U's money largely came from sales (over 30 million in transfer income) and winning the league last season, so sure, they also spent more than Arsenal, but they're still working to a budget of sorts.

Arsenal are wealthy because they have invested wisely in a new stadium and haven't thrown their money away on loads of second rate players.

And because they're a highly fashionable club in the wealthiest city in the world. It isn't all down to good financial management.

    It isn't a mistake, it's strategic.

And this is what I'm pointing out, if you stopped and bothered to pay attention. Arsenal are one of the biggest, most lucrative and profitable clubs not only in the country but the world. They're what, 4th, 5th on the list of clubs by revenue? They are by no means poor. Wenger is not short of money for investment in the squad, and he's not averse to splashing massive sums of money, sometimes on players who haven't worked out. Now, we can furrow our brows and plough through the reasons for that but the numbers tell the story, Arsenal are an extremely wealthy football club.

Another World Class contribution to the forum. 'World Class' in the Thierry Henry sense, obviously.

No problem, just try not to do it again.

Yep, i think only an imbecile would deny that. Only an imbecile would deny that Arsenal spend less than Chlesea, Man Utd or Liverpool though.
