    PAVEL POGREBNYAK (24)

Won Zenit the Russian league. Singlehandedly destroyed Olympique Marseille today with 2 goals taking his UEFA-talley to 7. Player of the tournament at Euro 2008.

    You heard it here first.

When they asked Dick Advocaat to compare him with Marco van Basten, he replied "Marco who?"

This is a big mean motherfucker who can play footy. Despite playing for fucking Tomsk he made the Russian team.

Also scored key goal/s this past weekend to win Zenit the Super Cup. People know about his strike partner Arshavin, but not yet about him.

After almost buying him for my UEFA fantasy team, I've got my eye on him too now ok

Actually he was injured for a while this season. Didn't even play all (UEFA Cup) matches. 7 goals in 7 matches.

He's from the Spartak Academy. Had a few hickups early on in his carreer, but after a few brief spells at smaller clubs, he's now ready to take on the world.

Hiddink has a few very good attacking players to choose from. Pavluchenko is a good striker too. Arshavin a good creative withdrawn striker/playmaker & plenty of other skilled midfielders.

Yep they have plenty of money & can pay as much in Russia as anywhere. Furthermore they'll have informed him they know where his family lives.

Would have been a great coup. He's certainly suited for the EPL.

He needs to get out into Europe, the Russian league is not good enough and not famous enough Smile Good player though, valuable for Zenit.

He looks like he means business! I'll keep an eye on him in the future.

    What are his skills?

ps Arshavin is a favourite of mine. I just love the way he strolls about the pitch. His running and dribbling style reminds me of Brian Laudrup.

I would love to see him in the UK.

Arshavin IMO was the difference between the USSR + England in Moscow last year, he simply controlled the game in the 2nd half, hopefully many scouts noticed his talents will do well for any top side in any of the prominent leagues in Europe .. excellent in FM as well Very Happy

It’s funny in their last game in the Euro qualifiers which they won 1:0 courtesy of a penalty, Arshavian was sent off and missed most of the game .. England could have snuck into the Euros. It’s a blow he will miss the first two games for the USSR but Hiddink will have something up his sleeves.

Hope you did. He was class v Bayer, grabbed a goal, so still UEFA Cup's topscorer. Scored another goal this weekend v Shimki away (always difficult). Whoever (Bayern or Getafe) have to play Zenit in the SFs will have a very tough tie. Arshavin is in great shape too & all players have had a long Russian winter to rest (Pogrebniak mainly spend his time killing Ural black bears with his bare hands).

he's a great player too. Pogrebniak is 'just' a great striker; Arshavin is a great attacking playmaker, a real old skool #10. Expect him to shine at Euro2008 too. Wouldn't mind having him at Arsenal, but he'll cost a fortune if he's going anywhere.

They can, but very unlikely to be successful. Hope Hiddink will play him at Euro 2008. Imo he's exctaly what Zenit's & Russia's creative midfielders need. Bit worried he'll go for Pavluchenko, who offers more movement.

I'm disappointed that he won't make the final. UEFA should rescind all suspensions for major European finals.

After all, it's a showpiece event where two squads play to decide which one of the two deserves to be crowned the champion. And how can you do that if you can't even select certain players from your squad?

Suspensions should skip the final and become applicable the following season.

But then it would potentially doctor the semifinal result - if a player may be suspended for the final, his mind may stop him from making a professional foul and getting a yellow.

If you pick up a just suspension it's your own fault (no suspensions for the final will gave evrybody a licence to pick up a yellow card in the semi's). Just think the appeal committee should you their job properly, so mistakes will be corrected. In 2002 Blackburn's Emerton picked up a second yellow of the return leg of Feyenoord's SF v Inter. He was given the yellow when he replaced the ball in the corner-quartercircle after the wind had blown it out after he initially had placed it in the right position. Was clear on tv footage. Still the verdict wasn't overturned (probably because UEFA get off on punishing Feyenoord).
