PFA Awards 2008

The PFA awards ceremony is held on Sunday with six star names vying for the top prize. The winners will be announced at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Sunday 27th April.

It was before the World Cup when English players were being deified by a lot of people here. That may have something to do with it! To be quite honest I don't remember him standing out that much for me then, although I'm sure the Liverpool fans will be able to give a couple of reasons why he deserved it (afterall he must have done something that season!).

2005–06: FA Cup winner
The 2005–06 season was perhaps Gerrard's most impressive to date.[9] He scored 23 goals in 53 games from midfield. In April, Gerrard received his greatest personal accolade to date, when he was voted PFA Player of the Year by his fellow players, becoming the first Liverpool player to win the award since John Barnes in 1988.[10] His only lowlight being a dreadful back pass which was intercepted by Thierry Henry, which lead to him scoring Arsenal's winning goal in a league game at Highbury.

Gerrard capped the season by captaining Liverpool to victory in the FA Cup. He scored twice in the Final against West Ham, including a dramatic equalizer in stoppage time to send the game into extra-time. The 35-yard strike (past Shaka Hislop) has been called the greatest goal in FA Cup final history, and was named Match of the Day's Goal of the Season. Gerrard also scored in the penalty shoot out.

His goals in the 2006 FA Cup final makes Gerrard the only player to have scored in all four major cup finals that it is possible for an England-based player to take part in.[11] Gerrard's goals were: FA Cup (2006 vs West Ham United), League Cup (2003 vs Manchester United), UEFA Cup (2001 vs Deportivo Alaves), and European Cup (2005 vs AC Milan).

All the FA Cup stuff (the bulk of your description above) is a bit irrelevant considering that in 2006 the award was also probably decided and given before the season's end.

Fair enough. Although obviously his most memorable achievement would have come after the awards.

I wasn't trying to be an arse here, I just couldn't really remember him doing anything particularly memorable in the league that season. Pretty impressive scoring record though.

He scored 23 goals from midfield, and about 10 (if not more) thunder strikes, broke his back carrying our arse back into the Champions League, and broke his back carrying our arse back to win the FA Cup.

Over all it was his most inspiring campaign in a red shirt bar none.

Looks like most of it to me. Doesn't mention anything else anyway apart from those 23 goals.

Anyway, I don't care about this, I don't even remember who were the other good players in 2006. Just saying the argument is a bit weak.

I can think of an occasion that season when he played midfield though - Benfica at home when he completed 52% (fifty-two percent) of his passes

It is a personal accolade, and his personal achievements after the last PFA award (Captaining Liverpool to the champions league win - in the most dramatic comeback of recent finals) and scoring 23 goals and carrying Liverpool back into European qualification and ensuringing we didn't lose the FA Cup final, is a pretty high individual acheivement.

I can understand people saying Ronaldo is not a midfielder, and perhaps Gerrards current position is not, however in 2006 to suggest he was anything but a midfielder is absolutely absurd - but then thats a typical response from yourself Pierre, you know - getting it absolutely wrong.

He played over twenty games in the middle and the rest at right MIDFIELD in that season FG

Try looking at the 51 other fixtures in the 2005 - 2006

He played CM in 51 fixtures did he ?

No - what i'm saying is because you find the issue contentious, try looking at the other 51 games, and you'll find he played 20-30 games in central midfield, and he remaining 20-30 games at right midfield - in a 4-4-2 system.
