    @anglo

    concerning your Stuttgart Season-Review

    where are the celebrations, old gal

    Ihr seid noch mal mit einem blauen Auge davon gekommen

    it could have been FAR worse

    your analysis sounds like something that could have come out of the pen of a FAZ scribe

    why no "Freudentaenze" over Gomez' otherworldly second season

    you have the most exciting striker in the world, and he proved it yet again, and you merely state that he cannot do everything by himself

    cheer up, my fair lady

    @haesschen

    why did you have to post the "Hitz is crying" picture

    it's dreadful

    no man should have to go through similar turmoil and the only appropriate response for a Teutonic man should to be bear it with grace and a dry eye

    just like Der Titan

    Otto, Hase, flip back a page or two and you can see me laola-ing and thanking Werder. Wink

    I'll take that FAZ-comment as a compliment.

    There is a time and place for Jubelarien, but last night wasn't, not after the last few matches. Sure, we got away, but for long periods of the season, it just was no fun watching the team.

    And Gomez doesn't make up for that.

    @Sheffield Gunner:
    Well, I can only hand the praise and thanks right back to you!

    You're right, especially because throughout the season, I've railed against other people who were saying that we only won the championship because everyone else was so bad--which is partially true, but on the other hand, we ended up winning the important games and even turned a few around after going one nil down. And as Lesley said, everyone gets what they deserve. Plus, we really have to hand it to Felix Magath for forming a team out of the chaos club that is Wolfsburg (remember, they only barely avoided relegation in at least the last two years)--he really is good at introducing and forming young players and his signings (e.g. Benaglio in goal) really have paid off.
    And in the end, as I said, getting into the UEFA Cup via the UI-Cup isn't impossible--I just hope the lads take the competition serious enough and have managed to get back into footballing mode by then. We do need the extra revenue, even if the competition is a lot less lucrative than the CL, both money- and opposition-wise or where the five year table was concerned. Nevertheless, it's good to see the VfB back in Europe (even if it might be for a short while).

    I forgot about Ewerthon... God, yeah. I'm so, so glad the Voronin rumour was just that, a rumour. "Bring in players wisely", and that's what I'm concerned about, especially with the two players that were already brought in. Sure, Jan Simak has talent and he had a stellar season at Jena--question is: Can he transfer that to the 1. Bundesliga and is he mentally prepared for the different sort of pressure? I mean sure, it would be great to have him replace Bastürk as OM, but I'm still a little wary, especially since I sort of followed his downfall back when he was with Hanover. However, since everyone deserves a second chance, who am I to start worrying and gnaw my fingernails before the new season has even started? Hild€ once said that he wouldn't give a judgement about the new season until after the tenth matchday, and that's what I'll stick to in regards to the new players. Well, given that they get enough time on the pitch until then.

    Where Schäfer is concerned... I'm starting to think it might be the best thing for his psyche to leave the club. Too much has happened, really, plus, as was said before: He doesn't quite fit the system. Let's hope there is a nice club somewhere who will snag him up.

    Meira has been sent off twice--but overall, his stats don't exactly look that well, at least where red cards are concerned (and that's just the league. He's always been a bit of a hot head and the reason why he was made captain was a) because he'd been captaining other sides before, b) he had enjoyed a fairly calm spell for a while and c) because the rest (i.e. Pardo) either hadn't been with the club for long enough or didn't have enough leadership qualities. And you're right, the age structure is one thing that concerns me as well. Back in the first CL season under Magath, there was more of a balance between young (Lahm, Hinkel, Kuranyi) and old (Soldo, Heldt) and especially the players sort of in the middle (Hild€, Meira, Bordon) and that's what we're lacking right now. Pardo has wonderfully replaced Soldo as a leader and position wise on the pitch, but it's not enough and Hitzl has been far too anonymous fora good part of this season, even if his return before Christmas sparked a short turnaround.

    Where Lehmann is concerned--I want to wait out the EURO, to see how he does. One thing that concerns me is his age--not so much because of injuries, but because his form may go rather quickly in the next year or two. On paper, he seems like the perfect bridge or way to ease Ulreich into the game rather than throw him off the deep-end like Hild€ at the start of his career. And you're right, Jens is accustomed to working with a relatively young defense, so it mightn't be the worst thing. However, as I said, I'd like to wait out the EURO (which, considering how much the German back four has changed, should be a good test).

    Where finances are concerned... It's not that long ago that the club was on the verge of bankruptcy (2002-ish), after which they had to rebuild it and rely on youth players rather than bring in new players from other clubs. And it worked, but apart from Marica's transfer last season, they have been understandably tight about the money. Which obviously goes for wages etc as well. What you suggest probably should be the way forward, though.

    Again, thank you for the thoughtful and detailed response.

    Apparently Hertha gained an Uefa Cup Qualification slot, winning the Bundesliga´s fair play ranking. Yikes
    Horrible led club that lost all of his identity by selling their young homegrown players, who blossom at other clubs now.
    They deserve it least.

    They will go out early though, preferably against some Polish or Danish side.

    Karlheinz Rummenigge used the festivities in the Munich town hall to give a massively venomous speech directed against the Mayor, questioning his recognition of the importance of FC Bayern for the city. Three minutes after his speech all of FC Bayern left the townhall and they didn't take the city's gifts with them.

    Rummenigge said FC Bayern is more important for Munich's "marketing" than the Oktoberfest.

    It's obviously difficult for a footballer to see football in perspective

    Mayer Ude has responded by pointing out 200m Euro of taxpayers money which went into the stadium infrastructure (unlike in other German cities; Schalke got only a few millions of support).

    Nobody pointed this out so far

    Hertha probably, yes. But Dortmund? Not so sure about that to be honest. Yes, Doll is tactically inept, and their central defence is awful. But they still managed to reach the cup final this season, so they seem to do well in cup competitions. And they will replace their slow and old central defence this summer, bring in some fresh blood. They already signed a Brazilian defender.

    I just hope that Lucien Favre is less of an idiot than Falko Götz was. Shouldn't be too difficult. If Hertha ruin our European season again, I want to see them permanently banned from Europe.

    Well, maybe if they do get rid of Doll at the end of the season and get a decent coach...

    I'm not saying that they don't have a decent squad, in fact it's a shame to only reach 13th place with that squad, if you ask me. But Doll is a major problem. The guy obviously ain't capable of learning at all.

    He didn't learn anything from his last season here, and basically nothing has changed since then. He's still blaming everyone but himself. (By the way, he still thinks he could have avoided relegation with us. Said so himself only a few weeks ago.)

    So yeah....I think much depends on "new coach?" and if yes, who.

    Doll may be tactically inept, but he still is a good motivator. With the right players (defence), Dortmund should do much better next season, even under him.

    To be honest, I didn't know too much about him before his name appeared in the newspapers here.

    But then I started to google him and read a lot about him. Also in the HSV supporters forum there is someone, who is also interested in Tottenham and posted a lot of interesting information and his personal opinion, too.

    From what I heard so far, he seems to be an excellent choice.

    Especially when it comes to the way he treats his team. There has been a lot of....unfairness here during the last six months, if you ask me, and I don't want to see that again. You could see how the team spirit suffered from that over the months. I want a coach who truly puts the "achievement principle" into practise.

    Plus, unlike many other Hamburg fans, I do think a great deal of our strikers. Of course, none of them is a Luca Toni, but well, we're not Bayern Munich either. I think they are actually the best we can get considering the possibilities we have. And I really want to see what Guerrero, Olic and especially Zidan can do in a system, in which they are actually allowed to...well...attack. I still think that Guerrero and Zidan would work quite well as a striker duo in the right system, and I hope that with the new coach they might get a chance to prove that.

    So basically I'm really looking forward to Mr. Jol. Smile

    Yes, most definitely. If you have to watch your most important midfielder play striker for half a year - most of the time trying to get the ball vs. two defenders, who are taller by a head - you start to feel sorry for your team after a while. And it does give you a headache, believe me.

    I realize this in now redundant as the Bundesliga is over but I found a program yesterday called "Zattoo" which shows German TV live in very good quality.

    Some of the Bundesliga followers abroad could use it to watch matches on DSF or ARDs weekly summerys. The quality is good plus it is only two seconds delay with what is shown on TV.
