Re: Del Piero vs Scholes
I can see where this one is coming from!
Well...10 years ago we had classics between UTD and Juve..which involved both players, both were my favo's back then. But now it is 2008 and Scholes is in the CL final again But Del Piero had a super season in Italy!!
Ooohhh!! the choices!!!

they were born in the same week, both burst onto the scene in '93 and I'm always suprised to see that not only are they both still alive, but they're still performing at the top level. Scholes on the verge of a league and CL double, Del Piero winning the Capocannoniere and still an acctive member of the Italian national side 13 years after his debut!
If there's a better pair to compare, well I don't know for where. So there.

Fair play Glenda
I like the comparison. Although F*ck knows if I'd be able to give an answer. Del Piero has certainly been the more mercurial and inconsistent, but on his day he is one of the most gifted footballers of this generation.

Fair point. Both been class players and both will be legends for their clubs.
I'll obviously be picking Scholes, but I can see why people would pick Del Piero as well.

That's a tough one...I'm going to say Del Piero because in spite of some pretty serious injuries he's still had a very comparable career to Scholes and even their trophies are about the same.

Strange comparison, very different type of players. Anyways, I went for DP coz I think he edges it on talent.

Del Piero was always my youth idol..I still have the Sony Juve shirt with his name in red on the back. It al started when he was there to stop Ajax's power in Europe! He was like my saviour!!
10 Years ago I wanted to have the same beard as him, but back I couldnt grow much..
I was also there when he failed to make Italy EC champion in 2000.
Nevertheless he is amazing!!

Surely you mean screwed up Italy's chances in the final by missing two sitters, which would have surely closed the game.Yef wrote:Del Piero was always my youth idol..I still have the Sony Juve shirt with his name in red on the back. Totti and Fiore were the chief architects of Azzurri's success in 2000, apart from the defence. They both had a brilliant championship. Unlucky for Italy, Vieri was injured and Zoff was too dumb to select the inspirational Roberto Baggio in the squad.Gigi Buffon #1 wrote:bluenine wrote:Surely you mean screwed up Italy's chances in the final by missing two sitters, which would have surely closed the game.Yef wrote:Del Piero was always my youth idol..I still have the Sony Juve shirt with his name in red on the back. Yeah he should have scored those chances..hence I was so happy for him he killed the German game with the 0-2!
But its quite harsh to blame it all on him...Italy didnt even deserve to be in that final
Same can be said for France!!

Re: Del Piero vs Scholes
Less known fact is that Scholes was similarly to blame for missing a piss easy chance against Argentina back in the 2-2 (lost on pens) game.
2-1 to England, a few minutes after Owen had given England the lead, the ball fell to Scholes inside the Argie box, flick of the right boot, pulls the ball a few inches wide of the bottom right post.
3-1 would have almost certainly killed the game and seen England through, who would then have beaten the Dutch with relative ease like they did in 96, followed by teaching the Brazilians a lesson in the semis (Ronaldo? Fat and useless back then) and then an easy 3-0 win against the French in the final on their home patch (Just like the rugby)
Not quite as obvious as the Del Piero misses in 2000, but equally hard to stomach.
Decided because the majority already on here are being bias that no point breaking a tradition - Im going Scholes for the fact he's never been relegated into the second division, never had an agent, and never grown ridiculous facial hair

Between the two, Del Piero - but it's no secret I think Scholes is a fine footballer.
Said it before, he's IMO, not your typical English footballer and the one player out of the England squads of the late 90s early 2000s that I thought quite highly of.
He'd have done well outside of England.

Re: Del Piero vs Scholes
Also at France 98 in the Group games, Scholes scored in the first game against Tunisia, but in the second against Romania couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo. In fact I can recall the ball just bouncing off him in the penalty area. Romania went 1-0 up and Owen was brought on late on. I'm sure that Hoddle told him to stand near to Scholes and sure enough, yet another miscontrol by the ginger hoofer gave Owen his first chance and first WC goal.
All wasted by Le Saux in injury time when he let Petrescu in for Romania's winning goal.

Scholes' ginger facial hair was of a man who couldnt give a monkey's scrotum what he looked like or what people thought of him. It was as if he had forgotten to shave.
Del Piero's facial hair was, well, so typically ITALIAN. You could just imagine the fella spending longer infront of the mirror than his missus, pruning his silly beard.
Then out onto the scooter, riding around cobbled streets gesticulating at other road users and hooting his horn and shouting "ciao bella!" at every half attractive female. Not that Im prone to stereotyping mind. Great player despite that
Scholes is just the archetypal old school footballer - where it was about the football and not about the style or image. The man has never had an agent for Christ's sake.
Luso - Scholes would have been a disaster abroad. You ever seen him try and tackle? He would have spent more time in the stands than on the pitch with those stricter continental referees

Re: Del Piero vs Scholes
I remember watching that game myself. Yes he was to be blamed for those misses. But then all great footballers have missed crucial chances at some point or the other. Nonetheless he is one of the most prolific scorers for the Azzuri & a reasonable way to judge a player would be to count the good he has done as well.
No surprise that I vote him compared to Scholes. Del Piero is one of my favorite footballers & for a variety of reasons. Talent alone, he is amazing. He is an artist when dribbling past defenders & is also highly acclaimed for his dead ball skills. And last but not the least he has always demonstrated great sportsmanship & behavior on the field & off it. Recent example being when he asked Trez to take the penalty against Sampdoria when he could have taken it himself & consolidated his position as the league's top scorer.

Scholes was GINGER. He should've shaved his head and his beard and even his pubes because ginger hair just looks silly. Obviously he couldn't give a monkeys scrotum, but he did feel the need to show the world his own scrotum.
At least Del Piero's facial hair actually looked good and was not ginger!
Del Piero is a gentleman, not some sleaze like Grosso or Materazzi.
Scholes is quiet and keeps a low profile (probably because he's so embarassed about being ginger), but he acts like a c**t on the field.
