I think Akinfeev is a great goalie with even greater potential.
Buffon is still the best goalkeeper overall in the world.
Casillas is great, too, but off the line he can look a little suspect at times. Great reflexes though.

Akinfeev has got me two FF clean sheets, so he's done a good job. Though, I can't remember him making any outstanding saves, and he does flap a bit. I'd say he's been solid, rather than spectacular.
I'd say
1)Buffon/VDV
3)Casillas
4)Akinfeev
Volkan has been great too

Boruc really has been fucking immense. When faced with one on ones especially, he's shown that he is genuinely world-class.

Boruc is 2nd but yesterday he was 1st and Akinfeev 6th. KGB must have been informed in time

Something fishy's going on their website:
"Which goalkeeper has impressed you most at UEFA EURO 2008?

When I checked Akinfeev had 78%. Buffon and Casillas were 4th and 5th with something like 3% each.

Why Buffon? He is a loser if it comes to penalties. I believe Guiza was his first penalty he ever stopped in a shoot out...

Why do people always rate goalkeepers about their shootout skill is beyond me. Its probably the least thing you have to be good at as a GK. Its more about luck and opponents than "skill"

you believe wrong
He's certainly not hopeless on penalties like Cech but I think the Spanish were smart to study which way the Italian players take their penalties. Casillas guessed the right way on all 4.

Being good on the line and in your box >>>>>>>>>>>>> good at saving penalties.
So casillas catched 2 against italy. But if you would rewind the shootout and do it again he might catch 0 and buffon 2.
Its not so much about skill and rating a GK the best of the tournament because he survived a shootout seems dumb.
Of course Casillas is good besides shootouts, but people always get creamed when a GK is goo here...

Is this a German implying that the winners of penalty shoot-outs are basically decided on which keeper is luckiest?Antarion wrote:Being good on the line and in your box >>>>>>>>>>>>> good at saving penalties.

Not really, how to win remains german secret.
But if you read my post before that, you will see that i mentioned the opponents (meaning: the shooting team you play against) is also important. Croatia lacked the confidence and would also go out against a turkish field player in goal for example.

Buffon was solid throughout Jol. Slightly error in misjudgement for the Netherlands first goal, but otherwise pretty good.
Completely forgot about Boruc
VDS/Volkan/Boruc/Buffon/Casillas/Akinfeev
Think the above 6 have been the best throughout, though Akinfeev has yet to do anything memorable as far as I'm aware

Ricardo Jol...you are such a c**t it's unbelievable. SO because Buffon only saved one penalty in a penalty shoot-out...he shouldn't be up there as one of the best of the tournament. What about his performance overall in the match? and the one against France? and the one against Romania? Even in the Holland match he made plenty of good saves.
Bogdan Lobont deserves a mention too!

I think the standard of Goalkeeping has been very High, I can only remember a few real dodgy moments, Cech vs. The Turks, Nikopolidis vs. Russia... not much else.
Ricardo is so obsessed with Van Der Saar, but on 2 of the 3 Russian goals, not saying they were howlers, but let's just say that he hardly covered himself in glory.
