    1)Buffon/VDV
    3)Casillas
    4)Akinfeev

    Volkan has been great too

Why Buffon? Shocked He is a loser if it comes to penalties. I believe Guiza was his first penalty he ever stopped in a shoot out...

Why do people always rate goalkeepers about their shootout skill is beyond me. Its probably the least thing you have to be good at as a GK. Its more about luck and opponents than "skill"

Anticipation, reading of the player' body language, effectiveness of how you put off the player. There's more to taking a penalty than just luck.

Claudio Tafferrell saved about 50% of the penalties he faced. f@ck me, if he was that lucky why didn't he just play the lottery.

    ok

Reina's brilliant as well, and then there's Mark Crossley, who had an outstanding record at Notts Forest.

Yes, it was for Klasnic's goal. Though I think it wasn't as bd because Modric came out of nowhere to cut Rustu off, whilst Nikopolidis went walkabout event though the Russians still had control of the ball.

    you believe wrong

He's certainly not hopeless on penalties like Cech but I think the Spanish were smart to study which way the Italian players take their penalties. Casillas guessed the right way on all 4.

In their last 2 penalty shoot-outs, Buffon and Cech have saved exactly the same number of pens. Wink

Anyway, he shouldn't be criticised on the penalty shoot-out in that match, but rather the fumble against Spain which he was incredibly fortunate to get away with.

S4P is right if it had been Cech that made the same mistake as Buffon he would have been vilified for it. Buffon was very lucky about that one. he was quite lucky it didnt go in. with that said Buffon is still nr.1 for me and no matter how many times Casillas makes incredible saves it wont stop that Buffon has a better all round game. regarding this cup i would have said VDS untill the game against Russia. those two goals were not good enough for goalkeeper for the tournament.
after that i cant see one shining over the others allthough Casillas and Akinfeev still has a chance to do somethign special in the semis and the final so i think it will be one of them.

Galli Blames Buffon For Penalty Defeat

Former Milan and Italy goalkeeper Giovanni Galli has criticised Gianluigi Buffon for not heeding his advice on how to save penalties following Italy’s shootout defeat to Spain at Euro 2008.

The Azzurri crashed out of the Euros on Sunday night following a 4-2 quarter final penalty shootout loss in Vienna.

Buffon saved one of Spain’s spot-kicks, while he also made a brilliant stop from Romania’s Adrian Mutu to keep Italy in the tournament during the 1-1 second group game draw.

Despite these saves, penalties are widely considered to be the only weakness in Buffon’s game, with many saying that he is unable to read spot-kicks.

"I am a friend of Gigi,” Galli told Sat2000.

“Last summer when we were together on holiday I gave him some penalty advice that he did not take.

"All penalty takers have a slight superstition, perhaps an involuntary movement of the head, dictated by instinct.

“At a time when they put the ball on the spot they raise their head to look where they will put the ball. I discussed these things with Gigi last year.

”However for the first penalty kick of Villa, when he was putting the ball on the spot, Buffon was still going towards the goal and was unable to notice such details.”

Galli won 19 caps for Italy, winning a World Cup winners medal in 1982, and playing at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. He was also part of the all-conquering Milan team of the late 1980s.

Er, whenever I take a penalty I always put the ball down and look at the bottom corner opposite to where I am going to kick it. The keeper then has to decide whether it is really where I am going to kick it, whether I am bluffing, or whether I am double-bluffing.

Alternatively he could study videos of me taking penalties, but say he finds 10, and I put 7 to the bottom right and 3 to the bottom left, it shows I may have a prefer for bottom right. So he could go that way but he has maybe 20% chance to get it right, as I could hit it top right, bottom or top left or straight down the middle.

Alternative he could also watch my body because I wouldn't try to make him think I was going to go one way and then kick it the other, or would I.

The players can of course make it harder for the keepers with feigning one way, stuttering their run up etc but it more or less comes to diving the right way to have a chance.
