But Senna wasn't his 1st choice either

I dont think so. if i remember correctly Albelda was first choices after 06 and it was only really when Koeman came in that he lost his place.

Frank, Albelda was always first choice. Towards the end of the season when he wasn't getting a game he was dropped.

    re Aragones.
His record speaks for itself. Unbeaten since November 06 and only four losses.

he didn't even start the first WC06 game, i'd hardly call that dead cert. I do think LA learnt one hell of a lot from that WC06, and that given the form of Senna he'd have never left him at home and almost certainly he'd have started him. Its v difficult to argue with his record since that dodgyish start to qualifying which included that pathetic effort v N Ireland, their form has been exceptional

It has become a real team now, the Barca players realised that if the want to win a price this season, they have to play like a team and listen to Iker.

    They did that very well!

Franco would have been proud last night ok

Aragones is a genius and lucky at the same time. There are also some X factors to his victory.

-- Poland qualified for the EURO for the 1st time in history
-- I'm 44 and Polish and supported Spain from the
    bottom of my heart
-- Ole has been using Franco avatar as a lucky charm
throughout the tourney- look how perfectly it all worked

Aragones isn't a genius nor particularly lucky but he knows when to substitute a player, knows his starting XI, isn't swayed by the press and has a very good relationship with the squad.

Aragones really surprised with his "play-with-your-BALLS" mentality

That was the biggest boost the spanish team needed! Former Spanish team mostly played not to lose.... he chose the other way around and with success...!

    Well done!

Well, Raul and Guti's numbers were better than some of the people Aragones called, so in my opinion at least Guti should have been called. Guti's characteristics fit perfect to Spain's systems. But it doesn't matter now, Spain won.

It wasn't luck neither Aragones been a genious, it was the players. Spain has one of the best squads in the world at the moment.

Glad to know that some madridistas like AS journo Tomás Roncero admits he was wrong in criticizing Aragonés for removing the cancer of the Spanish team called Raúl.

Roncero was such a c**t giving Aragonés so much shite because "his" Raúl was not selected by the old wizzard. Aragonés nearly quit the team because of all these madridistas c**ts, Roncero was just one of them.

Like I wrote earlier, nothing against Raúl, he's a very good player, but he never could leave "Real Madrid" behind when playing for the national team. He was always such a disruptive figure in the team, Spain never was a team. Spain was always clicks of madridistas, valencianos, catalanes etc.

Without Raúl, Spain became ONE TEAM, and imbeciles like Roncero are now kissing Aragonés' ass. Biggrin

I've always read that the Spanish always "bottled it", mainly from the English media. It wasn't that at all, Spain were never united until now. We shall see if them Spanish have learned their lesson Aragonés taught them. <Ale>

Marca are heading a campaign to have La Peineta, Atleti's new stadium, renamed Estadio Luis Aragones.

I'm all in favour for it, rather than calling it the Kia Arena or some other commercialised bollocks.

    Just wondering scratch

That's better. Senna deserved to start though, so can't see Albelda as having been more than squad player if he went.
