    Ferguson says Ronaldo is staying

Sir Alex Ferguson says winger Cristiano Ronaldo will stay at Manchester United next season.

Ferguson confirmed he met Ronaldo, 23, in Lisbon on Monday after weeks of speculation about the player's future.

"The meeting went well - I think we both put across our points of view - where we stand and where the player stands," explained Ferguson.

"I can say he'll be a Manchester United player next season. That's our stance - he won't be sold."

United will hope that Ferguson's comments at a press conference in South Africa will put an end to rumours linking Ronaldo with a transfer to Real Madrid.

Like to say I'm delighted but the guy has been a completely unloyal c*nt over the last few months. I wonder if he's injury played a part in this as well.

Anyway like I said, I'd still rather an unhappy Ronaldo, than most players in his position.

I think it's about 99% that he'll move next summer.

At least it gives us a season to find his replacement. Plus I still think he'll want to play well and star for the team, to a) keep Real's interest and b) to help his huge ego.

Not expecting you to understand Lulu but they are completely different situations. Fergie has been quoted as saying they have met and Ronaldo and himself have agreed he will stay.

The Liverpool Echo is just guessing that the deal could be done in 48 hours.

this is the best news for all parties, we will have a sulking unfit Ronaldo to look forward to. Wouldn't put it past him to take his unprofessionalism onto the pitch if he ever recovers from his 'knee injury'

He hardly ever passed to his team mates when he was happy at the club, what's he going to be like now?

    MOTIVATION & SOCCER PERFORMANCE

    INTRODUCTION
In soccer, nothing can affect performance as dramatically as a sudden loss of motivation. Without the motivation to succeed a player cannot survive the challenges soccer can throw up. If the team or player is going through a bad patch then motivating your players becomes especially important. However, an overly motivated player may be nervous and take risks. This article attempts to look at motivation and suggest ways to help improve the motivational capacities of players.
    http://www.footy4kids.co.uk/motivation-and-soccer-performance.htm

How big a part did motivation play in Ronaldo's success/form over the last two seasons?

    Motivation 2006/07?
    • Being made into a hate figure by the British media, booed in the semi-finals of the World Cup.
    • Even some Man Utd fans wanting to sell him.
    • Breaking Chelsea's dominance in the league.

    Motivation 2007/08?
    • Finishing 3rd in the WPOTY award.
    • Winning the Champions League.

    Motivation 2008/09?
scratch Ronaldo has won the FA Cup, League Cup, Premier League(2), Champions League, PFA POTY(2) and is considered the best player in the world.

But because of the Ronaldo to Real transfer saga, acting like a bit of a c**t, this has all changed...

    New Motivation 2008/09?*
    • Winning back the respect/love/legend status back from Man Utd supporters.
    • Having Real Madrid still want to sign him next summer.
    • Staying at top as the best player in the world.
    • Winning the league or champions league again.
    • Leaving the club on a high.

So because of what has happened this summer, are we going to see Ronaldo have his best ever season for Man Utd?

I can't see him scoring the same number of goals again but maybe his level of performance will be like the 2006/07 season but even better, if we sign a striker like Berbatov?

    *If Ronaldo stays.

I don't know why everyone assumes he'll be sold next summer. It's not necessarily true - Madrid may well not renew their interest. Or he could get injured. A lot can happen in one year.

It's not just motivation...physical and mental fatigue is a huge factor. I've said many times before - it seems that modern football has become so demanding that players who carry their team to the ultimate success (league and CL titles) cannot seem to do it for more than 2-3 seasons in a row before fading away quite a bit.

Even players who are naturally fit start suffering injuries. It's happened with Raul, with Ronaldinho, with Kaka, and now I think we're already seeing the start of it with Ronaldo - wants to move for a fresh challenge, and suffering a 3 month injury. You could also extend it to Dani Alves of Sevilla, who was their inspiration in 2-3 odd seasons of (arguably) overachievement, before being poor last season.

True because most madrid fans(me included) thought that after last season we were gonna go for Kaka for again the next summer but this summer has been all about Ronaldo. hopefully by next summer some of the hype has gone down. if we had to get a big name player i would much prefer Kaka even though he would be even harder to fit in.
