Re: Ferdinand...
I don't think the youtube video is entirely clear, and I can't remember the incident that well, but I'm inclined to think that Shearer did swing his foot at Lennon - though I don't think he intended to kick him in the face. When Shearer faced an FA Commission over the incident, Lennon actually defended him; said that he thought the incident was an accident; and also "called for an end to what he saw as a witch-hunt against Shearer."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/sport/football/91721.stm
But whatever, if the Lennon incident is taken as an instance of Shearer lashing out, then it was the only time he did so in his career. He played just within the rules of the game - he was physical, he'd use his weight and his strength, but he rarely (perhaps only once) lost his cool during a match and I genuinely believe that he never tried to kick, elbow, hurt another player. I know, having seen him play at least a hundred times at St James', that in eight out of ten games there he would be victimised by defenders and referees - defenders would kick and pull at Shearer, and referees would always give fouls against him for that - they seemed always to come determined not to appear swayed at all by the crowd or by Shearer's status.
When people list the great Premiership players, and mention the likes of Cantona, Keane, Scholes, Bergkamp, Vieira, Gerrard - well, Shearer was a better football player than any of these, and he was infinitely less cowardly and less dirty.
I don't know enough about football outside the Premier League in the mid 90s so as to comment with any authority on whether Les Ferdinand was world class or not at that time. But he's still one of the best forwards I've seen in the Premier League. He was immense in the air, but he was more than that - he was quick, powerful, could finish really well with either foot, and could lay the ball off and play other players in too. Andy Cole is in the same bracket - he moved better than any other forward I've seen, and created so many of his own chances through his agility. It's a big shame that the Shearer/Sheringham and Shearer/Owen partnerships limited Ferdinand and Cole's England opportunities, because I think they were both more than good enough to excel for England - even if the Shearer/Sheringham partnership was a good one, I think things should have been a bit more flexible, and that both should have received more faith and playing time.

Cannavaro and Materazzi managed to mark Shearer out of a game? They must be superhuman! Lets not forget that Bellamy was sent of after 5 minutes and he was left up top on his own. It's a shame Fabio didn't have such luck in the 2nd match when Shearer scored 2.
Anyway that elbow was more him trying to shrug the little $h!t off him, rather than him lashing out. Cannavaro was hanging from his shirt like a baby Orangutan.

Nope just Cannavaro. Neither goal in the 2nd leg was Cannavaro's fault. Blame Toldo and Coco.
The elbow was pure petulance from Shearer. He was annoyed that Cannavaro was marking him so well.

So Cannavaro marked Shearer "out of the game"(not difficult in the circumstances, we never had the ball) but didn't mark him in the 2nd game? Shearer got on the end of 2 crosses with Cannavaro nowhere, yet as a CB it wasn't his fault?
Really there should have been a foul against Cannavaro before the elbow, you can't just hang onto a guys shirt.

Re: Ferdinand...
Ferdinand has Sunderland medical
West Ham defender Anton Ferdinand is wanted by Sunderland
Ferdinand is a graduate of the West Ham youth system
West Ham defender Anton Ferdinand is set to finalise his move to Sunderland after undergoing a medical on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old will become Sunderland boss Roy Keane's ninth signing of the summer in a deal thought to be worth around £8m.
"Anton is up this morning for a medical, we're looking to tie it up on Tuesday," Keane said.
"I met him last week and it went well. He will be a good addition to our squad and it will keep people on their toes."
Ferdinand will be in direct competition with Nyron Nosworthy, Danny Collins and Danny Higginbotham for a place in the centre of defence.
It is a position that Keane has been looking to strengthen over the summer, with Jonny Evans having returned to Manchester United after his loan ended.
Keane also revealed that he is keen to make one more signing, saying: "I will be delighted if I can get him and another one, and then we can concentrate on the season."
News conference: Roy Keane
Ferdinand will, however, have to wait for his Sunderland debut, with Keane refusing to consider him for Wednesday's Carling Cup clash with Nottingham Forest even if he signs in time.
"He's had a slight hamstring strain so it would be unfair to throw him straight in.
"There is an international break coming up so it would give him a chance to train with us for two weeks."
606: DEBATE
I don't think Curbishley is controlling who is going out the door. The finances are dictating things and the board are making all the decisions
The Great Tevez Escape
Ferdinand, the younger brother of Manchester United star Rio, signed a three-year contract extension with West Ham in July 2005 and his current deal is due to expire in 2010.
He came through the ranks at Upton Park, making his debut in the first game of the 2003/04 season and cementing his place in the side the following campaign.
An England Under-21 international, he has played more than 160 games for West Ham, scoring five times.
And his impending departure has left Hammers manager Alan Curbishley keen to sign a defender.
"We are thin on the ground," said Curbishley. "If we lose another defender we will have to react to that."

As far as i remember Newcastle created more chances in the first half even though they were down to 10 men. I can't find any possession stats though but i'd guess that it was pretty even.
First goal is Coco's fault. He gets completely skinned by Bellamy.
Second goal, Toldo comes out for the cross and flaps at it. It falls to Shearer who has to simply tap it in.
Like i said it was very petulant from Shearer. Cannavaro was involved in a bit of shirt tugging (which happens alot anyway) and Shearer decided to lash out at him. He was very lucky not to be sent off. Vieri would never have done something so petulant. What made it even more laughable was that after the incident Sheaer was complaining to the ref!

Rio wants to be England captain so that when he renegotiates his contract again, he can go "England Captain, braap!!" and ask for another 10 grand/week

There was no foul, it was fussy refereeing. Shearer was always an easy taget to give the blame to though as most people outside Newcastle couldn't stand him, simply because he scored against everyone else.Otto's Olympic Dream wrote:Shearer's elbows have always been the stuff of legend.

I'd wager the reason people didn't like wor Alan wasn't so much his scoring prowess as his drole interviews, bland goal celebrations and propensity to whinge at referees despite being a dirty bugger himself.
What ws that game anyway you were referring to? Versus Inter?
