    It's time cheers

Seems like an especially long pre-season, but we're finally set to go in La Liga. Should be another interesting and unpredictable season, but unfortunately there's no particular standout fixture on the opening weekend, Depor-Madrid probably the best one.

I have a feeling that we will finally beat Deportivo at the Riazor. The reason is that all the signs are pointing that it will not happen. Still a big mess with Robinho and future transfers, no Ruud, no VDV, etc.

In the past when all the signs pointed that we would finally do it, we never won. Maybe what we really need is bad luck in order to get good luck Cool

The Great Weekend Predictions return! Round One

    Friday 29 August 2008 12:00

    Saturday

    Espanyol vs Valladolid

Where better to kick off a sparkly new season that at the most beautiful, scenic stadium in the whole of southern Europe, if not the planet - the Montjuic.

Unfortunately, the bleak, concrete carbuncle nature of the stray-cat infested Espanyol home has been well and truly absorbed into the DNA of the club.

Perico boss, Tintin "sacked in September" Marquez is charging into the opening round of matches white with fear that his squad is going to be three players short by the time Saturday rolls around. The footballers who may be fleeing Barcelona are Luis Garcia, Pablo Zabaleta (almost gone) and Albert Riera.

Zabaleta, for one, is keen as mustard over a possible move to Juventus. "If they call then I will run to them!" gasped the Argentine defender. The problem is that he is set to sign for the very non-Italian, Manchester City.

"Any news at the moment, is bad news" admitted a morose Marquez.

    LLL Prediction - Draw.

    Valencia vs Mallorca

Until last Sunday, the men from Mestalla had been suspiciously quiet. No presidents had been hired or fired. No players had claimed asylum in Andorra and no potentially squad-shattering disasters had taken place on the pitch.

But all that went down the Swanny last weekend, when Valencia rolled over like kittens and allowed nine men Real Madrid to score three goals past them in the Super Cup.

"When we lose, we lose together and you cannot blame someone," confessed Raúl Albiol after the game, clearly pointing a finger at Timo Hildebrand.

On Monday, the club's former sporting director and then technical secretary, Juan Sanchez - a man who had only been in the post since May - decided to quit, with a fall out with the Sporting VP being widely blamed as the root cause.

"When you work you have to be 100% convinced but a lot has changed since I came in," admitted Sanchez as he walked the well-trodden path out of the Mestalla gate.

    LLL Prediction - Home win.

    Sunday

    Athletic Bilbao vs Almería

Currently doing the rounds on Spanish television is an advert promoting the start of the new league season. And in this special TV spot, many Primera managers are filmed pretending to give it the big old "Vamos!" to their nonplussed players.

Some are clearly more comfortable in front of the camera than others. Bernd Schuster looks even odder than normal whereas Athletic's Joaquín Caparrós really gives it his Andalusian all.

Caparrós had to test his acting prowess again this week, when probed thoroughly about the decision to flog the rather handy Aritz Aduriz to Mallorca.

"At the moment it looks like a step back but it's a step forward," claimed the Bilbao boss quite unconvincingly.

"If we don't want Liverpool or Tottenham to come and take our players of potential, we need to retain them on suitable contracts," reasoned Caparrós who said that the six million euros paid by Mallorca for his striker would be reinvested.

Less diplomatic about the transfer was Athletic president, Fernando García Macua. "With the maximum respect towards Aduriz, who is a good player, he is not indispensable."

The fans would disagree and during the week an SMS campaign was launched urging protests against the board. "The president is laughing at us. They must hear us," was the spooky message.

    LLL Prediction - Home win.

    Atlético Madrid vs Malaga

Of course it had to be Liverpool. In a match that already has the rojiblanco noses twitching in anticipation - it's either that or the spill-over from the local land works - Fernando Torres is coming home. Unless Rafa Benitez decides that an untimely rotation is called for.

Despite Kun Agüero’s admirable but doomed attempts to suggest otherwise - "it's Atlético vs Liverpool," whispered the mini-Maradona hopefully - it's all about El Niño.

The other news from Atlético's wacky world is the arrival of Ever Banega on his clause-ridden one-year deal. And his first appearance in the city? Turning up in the early hours of the morning at a restaurant where some of the team happened to be celebrating their sensational Champions League win over Schalke.
    lol!

    LLL Prediction - Home win.

    Betis vs Recreativo

Whilst Darth de Lopera is due to have his hernia given a good seeing to - people will do anything to get out of watching Betis - his team take to the field in a game they need to win to avoid all manner of chaos breaking out. Yes, it's that bad already.

Summer in Betico-land mainly consisted of de Lopera upsetting Edu by refusing to renew his contract and, manager, Paco Chaparro upsetting Beijing-busy Rafael Sobis by suggesting that the striker wanted a move away from the club. As if anyone would.

And it was a slur and a slight on Sobis' good name, claims the Brazilian striker. "I don't have to speak to anyone, I only have to get dressed and train," grumbled Rafael hinting that he is unlikely to add 'stop poncing about score goals' to his list of club duties.
    Laugh
    LLL Prediction - Home win.

    Sporting vs Getafe

This week's News from Sweden from thelocal.se concerns an incident that can happen to anyone. Especially if you are Guti.
    Laugh

"A 78-year-old woman who was planning to fly to Germany from Stockholm’s Arlanda airport found herself taking an unexpected trip on Tuesday.

The woman misheard instructions from airport personnel, who directed her to an unmanned baggage conveyor belt after she had checked in.

Rather than placing her bags on the conveyor belt, she instead hopped on the belt herself, at which point she was whisked away to the baggage handling area."

    LLL Prediction - Home win.

    Racing vs Sevilla

Marcelino's sudden rush of blood to the head decision to join second division Zaragoza means that it is hard to tell what the future has in store for Racing Santander.

New number one and old number two, Juan Ramón López Muñiz is a bit of an unknown quantity whilst the transfer activity has been less than busy. But that's not unsurprising for a club that went 20 million euros over budget last season, according to Marca.

    LLL Prediction - Away win.

    Numancia vs Barcelona

The Catalan press have barely acknowledged the fact that the league season starts on Sunday against Numancia. Instead it's their easy peasy pudding and pie Champions League group that has grabbed their attention.

"Easy! Easy!" screams Mundo Deportivo's headline on a draw that puts Pep's puppies in with Sporting Lisbon, Basle and Shakhtar Donetsk. "The group is so easy that Barça are obliged to get all 18 points," writes Lluis Mascaro - a man whose photo suggests that he almost certainly runs a mobile disco on his free weekends.

Numancia await the Catalan club on Sunday, and it is the first leg in the start of a season that sees the club facing Barça, Real Madrid and Villarreal in their first three matches. But that doesn't put off club stalwart Txomin Nagare. "We have the smallest budget so we have to use other weapons," says the axe-wielding old timer.

    LLL Prediction - Away win.

    Osasuna vs Villarreal

If Marca's Roberto Gómez is to believed - which he isn't - Villarreal president, Fernando Roig has the hump with his Real Madrid opposite simply because he has always had it in for both him and the club.

Fernando Roig would say that he has the hump with his opposite number because of his attempts to nick Santi Cazorla when he was promised that no move would be made for the midfielder.

"Cazorla did not offer himself and Calderón has not been telling the truth," stormed the Yellow Submarine big wig.

Away from the boardroom battles and Villarreal are in a spot of bother injury-wise with Pires, Nihat, Rossi and possibly Ibagaza all out of action this weekend. And the numbers of walking wounded will no doubt increase further after being kicked around the pitch by Osasuna for 90 minutes.

    LLL Prediction - Draw

    Deportivo vs Real Madrid

If Miguel Angel Lotina's smile-enhancing facial muscles had not moved to a retirement complex in Marbella back in the Nineties, the Deportivo manager would have had a grin the size of Maniche's neck on Thursday night.

That's because his gallant Galician side battled through to the proper round of the UEFA Cup where instant relegation is guaranteed due to the 'wafer thin' nature of his squad.

But they face another challenge on Sunday night, with the visit of Real Madrid who still cannot get off the front pages of the Spanish press. And that's mainly because their president agreed to give an interview to nine - yes, nine - Marca journalists.

Highlights of day one of the piece are Calderón's claims that Milan said Kaka was available for 100 million euros, the club deliberately did not invoke Cazorla's sell-on clause so as not to upset Villarreal, the team are united more than ever before (i.e. Raul is happy), the club's relationship with Manchester United is magnificent and only God knows if Cristiano Ronaldo is coming.

    LLL Prediction - Away win.

Sid Lowe's take on the new season.

    http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/08/29/calderon_feels_the_heat_after.html

Calderón feels the heat after summer of market failure

Signing after signing has eluded Madrid this summer and with rivals threatening to get their act together, expect a much closer title race

    Sid LoweAugust 29, 2008 10:34 AM

Tuesday afternoon near Spain's east coast, among the ceramics factories that churn out pots, plates, bogs and baths for an entire nation. Santi Cazorla ambles out of the dressing room at the former orange grove that is Villarreal's training ground. He leans against the barrier, babbling down the phone. The impossibly chirpy chappie whose team-mates dubbed him the Spanish Ronaldinho because he's just as nice, just as ugly and just as good chunters away, oblivious to everything. Including the camera crew.

"Treat me nicely, mate!" he says, "I'm going to be the new boy and I ain't got a fucking clue how things work there." There is a pause before he adds: "I just spoke to El Guaje and he said he might be coming too." Behind the camera a voice whispers: "El Guaje? Isn't that Villa?" Cazorla spins on his heel, conversation safely finished, and heads towards the dressing room with a cheery "thanks Iker, I'll call you tomorrow when I get there." The penny drops. Iker?! He means Iker Casillas! Guaje?! He means David Villa! There?! He means Madrid! Tomorrow?! He means, well, tomorrow! Hang on a minute: Santi Cazorla is joining Real Madrid tomorrow! And so is David Villa!

Ramón Calderón had got away with murder yet again. Not literally - he's the current Real Madrid president, not the former Atlético Madrid one - but figuratively. The man who was twice jilted at the altar only to bag Ruud van Nistelrooy on the rebound and got turned down again and again only to suddenly find Wesley Sneijder on his arm had done it again. He'd missed out on Cristiano Ronaldo but still came up smelling of roses. Never mind the Portuguese winger with the skin like a pair of Clarks, he had landed something even better: two Euro 2008 winners at just over half the price.

Only he hadn't. And he didn't. When Manchester United announced that Ronaldo was staying, Alex Ferguson claimed Madrid had been "dealing with a different animal". But there's nothing different about United; Calderón couldn't take sweets from a baby - not even a baby that doesn't like sweets. Armed with Sooty and Sweep. You'd think Calderón was carrying a copy of Watchtower under his arm the way doors get slammed in his face at every turn. Within hours of Madrid announcing to Chelsea that Robinho's replacements were in the bag, they'd wriggled away: Cazorla had announced he was staying at Villarreal and Villa had announced he was staying at Valencia. Just as Ronaldo had announced he was staying at United. Just as Cesc Fábregas had done. And Kaká. Door after door. Slam! Slam! Slam! And don't come back. Smiley

Like Michael Jackson, Calderón has lost face. Of all the players he has promised, only Arjen Robben has actually turned up - and he came a year late. He looks like a liar or an incompetent impostor. Or both. He's got the fans on his back and the coach in a strop: Schuster wanted new signings; the supporters wanted the old ones, chanting "where's Kaká?" at Robben's presentation last year and "Ronaldo! Ronaldo!" at Rafael van der Vaart's this. His continued search for a signing to salvage credibility makes him look more desperate and less credible than ever. He can't manipulate the media like his predecessor, doesn't have the guile others had, and lacks the popular legitimacy he frantically seeks - despite the success for which he deserves, but rarely gets, credit. He has lost Madrid's members' assembly and had more pañoladas (displays of disapproval) than Florentino Pérez ever faced. Forever teetering on the edge of the abyss, the second Madrid stop winning, he'll fall in.

And there's the rub. Because while Madrid beat Valencia with nine men in the Super Cup, and although they walked the league last year, this season should be a different prospect. In fact it is tempting to say that Madrid are not favourites. After all, they have made only one signing, the squad looks short, and it's hard to see last season's key players performing as well: Guti is unlikely to be as consistent, Raúl looks flat and Wesley Sneijder is injured. Arjen Robben, playing brilliantly, is likely to be the main man - but how many games will he miss?

More importantly, Madrid's opponents look strong. Barcelona have lost gym-monkey Ronaldinho, spent over €75m (£60.5m) on players they actually needed, including Dani Alves, and fluked their way to keeping Samuel Eto'o despite hawking him all over the world. Including Uzbekistan. Better still, they have a whole new culture under Pep Guardiola - even if, once again, much will depend on Leo Messi staying fit. Atlético Madrid have virtually no squad at all but their starting XI looks strong after they managed not to buy an entire team of mediocre players for once - instead buying underwear models Johnny Heitinga and Tomas Ujfalusi at the back, while Kun Aguero continues to be breathtakingly brilliant at the other end. Villarreal have added to an already impressive, settled squad with Ariel Ibagaza and Joseba Llorente. And Sevilla have lost Alves, Keita and Poulsen but not Luis Fabiano, Freddie Kanouté or Diego Capel, while sporting director Monchi has brought in five new faces and the early signs are superb.

And then, as fate-tempting tradition dictates, there is Valencia. New coach Unai Emery has already worked under two presidents and three sporting directors since taking over, the club still has two stadiums - one it can't sell and one it can't build, and that self-destruct button is still there whispering: "Go on, press me, I dare you. You know you want to." But with Juan Soler properly gone this time, the civil war should be over - and if ever there was a guarantee of success it's the departure of the man with the ruddy cheeks and tache.

"One thing's for sure, it's not going to be easy this season," Iker Casillas insisted yesterday. And if life isn't easy for Real Madrid, it sure ain't easy for Calderón. Even with Madrid winning back-to-back titles for the first time in 18 years he has been on a knife-edge. Fail on the pitch as he has failed off it and the next door slamming in his face will be the Bernabéu's.

    Cazorla, what a legend <Ale>

what is this story about this baggage conveyor belt all about and what relevance does it hold to La Liga?

Does anyone know btw when Espanyol's new stadium will be ready? Halfway through the season as planned? Or has the construction company gone belly up?

Apparently Emery has dropped Hildebrand from Valencia's squad for today's match, and will instead use Brazilian keeper Renan (he played for them at the Olympics but hasn't played at all with Valencia this pre-season), or youth team player Vicente Guaita.

I think it will be ready for the next season and there were rumours that they would bring Chelsea or Milan to the first game.

What is happening with Barca's stadium as well?

Mallorca could be in for a torrid time this season. They have sold four of their five best players (Guiza, Ibagaza, Jonas, Navarro) and lost a couple of others too. Don't appear to have brought in a whole lot of quality either.

They were involved in a finanical crisis so that is why they sold those players without replacing them. they will have to find some real talent to survive.

Balague and Albert Ferrer doing the season preview bit on Sky. Sorry if I'd missed this first time around but apparently Ramos tried very hard to get Eto'o?

Albelda is back in Valencia line-up?

Well Balague will say anything to complicate matters for us.. but there were rumours that Spurs wanted him. Eto'o however very quickly said that he had no intention of joining them. Mountains out of molehills.

I think he tried but Barcelona were asking a ridiculous amount for a transfer listed player.

So far, Albelda and Baraja have been first choice under Unai Emery.

Kameni makes a super save in the 93rd.. Espanyol wins 1-0, but very close to messing up..

Yeah 10mil euros in wages apparently for Eto'o.

Good to see Albelda back in the team.
