'Gokmaffia kocht vier uitslagen op het WK 2006'
    01/09/2008 14:20

Declan Hill claims to have proof that at least 4 matches at the WC where bought :

    Ghana - Italy 0:2
    Ghana - Brasil 0:3
    Ukraine - Italy 0:3
    Ecuador - England 0:1

If he *really* can prove this, all hell wil break lose Shocked

Italy had little to do with it if the story is true. Asian gambling mafia bought those matches.

Does that mean that if Carlos Tenorio had scored instead of hitting the bar v England that John Terry would have been our Andres Escobar ?

Was the World Cup 2006 fixed?
By NICK SEELIGER and WALTER M. STRATEN

Ghania's former goalkeeper Abukari Damba, at the centre of match-rigging allegations surrounding the 2006 World Cup, has denied any involvement.

Speaking exclusively to BILD, Damba hit back at claims that he was involved in match-fixing during the World Cup in Germany. The allegations were raised by Canadian investigative journalist Declan Hill, who claims that England's last 16 victory over Ecuador, Ghana's defeat to Brazil and Italy's victory over the Ukraine during the tournament in Germany may have been rigged.

Hill claims he has significant evidence to show that Brazil’s 3-0 win over Ghana in the last 16 was fixed by members of the Asian gambling mafia. In his book ‘The Fix’, which comes out on Tuesday, Hill claims that ex-Ghanaian footballer Abukari Damba (36) acted as the middleman between the players and the gambling organisation.

BILD contacted Mr. Damba at his home in Ghana to confront him with the allegations.

BILD: Mr. Damba, you have been accused of attending a meeting in Bangkok where you agreed to manipulate Ghanaian players, convincing them to throw a World Cup game. Are you a World Cup cheater?

Damba: (loudly) "That is a lie! Untrue! I have friends in Asia. But I have never in all my life been to Bangkok.”
    Ghana's Appiah battle Brazil's Ronaldinho

Ghana's Appiah (l.) battles Brazil's Ronaldinho during the 2006 World Cup match. Was the game fixed?

BILD: You reportedly offered each Ghanaian player $30,000 so that they would lose to Brazil by at least two goals.

Damba: “With all due respect, that is completely untrue! I never talked to anybody about my games. If Mr. Hill has proof of this, he should show it. The man just wants to ruin me and my family. I won’t let it happen. I will take all legal measures necessary to clear myself of these accusations.”

BILD: Were you at the World Cup in Germany?

Damba: “Yes, but only for Ghana’s second and third round games. I was already back home in Accra for the last 16 games.”

BILD: But you could have fixed the game before hand…

Damba: (very loudly) “I am an innocent black man.”

BILD: You were suspended as a goalkeeping coach because you supposedly wanted to fix a 2007 match between Iran and Ghana…

Damba: “I allowed players to speak with intermediaries before the game. But I never handled any money so that they would lose a game. Yes, I was suspended from the national team. I am very sick. I just came from the hospital and had two heart operations.”

BILD has also learnt that Hill wants to speak this evening on the German talk show 'Beckmann' (10.45pm, ARD) about the two other World Cup games he says look suspicious. He claims he was told by Asian bookmakers that the England-Ecuador and Italy-Ukraine matches might have been fixed as well.

Since the scandal has been made public, FIFA has not yet made a move. A spokesman for the organisation told BILD: “I can only confirm that President Blatter has met with Mr. Hill. But we need more details before we release a statement."

The Bundesliga was also rocked by further match-rigging accusations, following the scandal surrounding corrupt referee Hoyzer three years ago, after a report in German news magazine 'Der Spiegel' identified two Bundesliga games as having been rigged - Kaiserslautern’s 5-1 loss to Hannover and Siegen’s 2-0 defeat to Karlsruhe, both in 2005.

I was at that match. Ghana's undoing was Asamoah Gyan's profligate finishing. He is not an international class striker, but it wasn't so clear then. Same issues undid Ghana in ACN. Italy started slow but took their chances. I don't think it was fixed.

And in Ghana v Brasil they were without their best player at that time Essien - suspended. wasn't there for that one, but what is Hill's evidence?
