Everyone said it straight after the Euro 08 draw: Group C was the group of death.

    Netherlands
    France
    Romania
    Italy

Wow....Shocked unbelievable.... Shocked group of Genocide....Shocked

    Now the results....
Neither of them reached the semi finals; neither of them convinced at the qualifying (friendlies) campaign so far....

    Last night:
    Netherlands - Australia 1-2
    Austria - France 3-1
    Romania- Lithuania 0-3
    Cyprus - Italy 1-2 *

    * winning goal scored deep in injury time!

Were we all right? was this the toughest group or was it the most overrated group?

Netherlands is a solid team. France has been on the decline for some time now. As for the olive pickers, they deserve no respect.

    It was...

Group of death is an informal sobriquet used in football and other team sports to describe a situation that often occurs during the group stage of a tournament (such as the first round of the World Cup), where:

all the teams present in one group are considered to be roughly equal in skill

    or

one or more of the underdog teams plays the kind of football that may shock a better team

The key element is that any team could plausibly qualify and any could plausibly be eliminated. It is, in other words, the most unpredictable group of the tournament.

Since Zidane's departure, France really only have one genuine game changer and that's Ribery. But unlike Zidane he can't carry a team.

The common opinion was that it was a group of that, because :

    a) a possible favourite would go out at groupstage

    b) teams from that group would have to peak too early / use too much strength in the groupstage to win the whole thing

....seems to me it lived up to group of death ok

Question They've got enough of them. Talent is there, it's the coach that isn't getting the best out of them.

Calidad wrote:But unlike Zidane he can't carry a team.

That's doing great disservice to the likes of Deschamp, Thuram, Djorkaef, karembeu, Blanc, Lizza, Petit, Pires, Henry, Vieira etc

Zidane is one of the top 5 players to ever play the game, so it's no surprise they were a different team with him in it but he never carried them. I don't know how much of world cup 98 u watched, but they got to the final mainly down to their defence and CM.

Problem with France is, their team is always set up to play with a play maker(no.10), so they seem to lack ideas when that play maker(zidane) is absent. They should abandon that style of play - playing with real play makers is a thing of the past.

Also Pires was criminally underused by them and he was very unlucky to miss out on 2002 WC through injury, that could have been his tournament.

France had a wonferful defensive unit too, but Zidane carried the creative threat. Look how $h!t the side were in the 02 WC (failed to score) when he was absent. They also needed to recall him to qualify for the last WC. He was the only player of note in the Euro 04' too.

Ribery is talented, but he is no Zidane. Nasri/Ben Arfa are still learning the game.
