Euro 2008 Group of Death! Empty Euro 2008 Group of Death!

Post by bluenine Fri Sep 08, 2006 10:53 am

3 WC quarterfinalists in one qualification group was always going to be difficult.... The current situation:

    Group B
    Pts P W D L GF GA +/-
    1 Scotland 6 2 2 0 0 8 1 7
    2 France 6 2 2 0 0 6 1 5
    3 Georgia 3 3 1 0 2 8 6 2
    4 Ukraine 3 1 1 0 0 3 2 1
    5 Lithuania 1 2 0 1 1 2 3 -1
    6 Italy 1 2 0 1 1 2 4 -2
    7 Faroe Islands 0 2 0 0 2 0 12 -12

Have the azzurri dug themselves into too deep a hole this time?? With only the top two going through, which teams will qualify??

how do you see this group going??

France and Scotland - just to be controversial more than anything.

Donandoni hasn't made the best of starts though and Scotland look to be on a real run of form

Yup, and failed to gobble points of France - eventhough it was in played France. Italy NEED to take points of Ukraine and Scotland, to give themselves a shout at the second spot for now.

Still, the world champions should qualify.

Richt now I'm considering the Scots so far as over-achieving (should've drawn against Lithuania). I can't imagine them keeping this up for two years.
The Italians on the other hand are underachieving.

Ukrainians qualified last time unbeaten if I'm correct; with their (boring) counter style and playing at home in f*cking Ukraine, they'll be difficult opponents. They have to the system to grind out results. They have enough class to even sneak in the top ten FIFA rankings IMO. Can't say that about the Scots. As hard as the Scots will fight at home, the thougher the Ukrainans are.
In Groups like these, you cannot afford slipups. And France shouldn't lose none of the other games to be honest, in fact, they should be winning them all.

Italy needs to play catch-up, and have the impossible task of taking points off the Ukrainians away from home. Automatically assuming they win everything at home (incl France) and win everything against the other opponents too. Could get very interesting.

And if they have away games in cold Lithuania and Georgia to look forward to as well.

I think Scotland have extremely little chance... almost negligible... they will lose major points to France, Ukraine, and Italy. I am VERY suprised that so many people actually think they will qualify... I guess its just wishful thinking....

IMO, France and Ukraine are favourites now, with Italy still very much in it with a good chance... if Italy win the next two games, then they will have a better chance than Ukraine - so the next two games will be crucial...

France have made their positon very comfortable, and look good to top the group. Still, there are many teams in this group which can take points off each other, so this one I think will go down to the wire - last day heartbreak for one of the world cup quarterfinalists!

You seem to be more confident of Italy than I am!!

Italy are not very good in qualification leagues, and usually drop a few unnessary points along the way (draws against smaller teams like they did with Lithuania)... add that fact to their current position, they are in grave danger.... Italy need at least 4 points against Ukraine and win at home against France (which ll not be easy) to have a chance of qualification...

Italys qualification is far from certain.

they started well yes, after that we were all over them, and as soon as we scored they played "everyone behind the ball".

i think draws against scotland are pathetic, and we need a win too.

While scotland can take points off Italy at home, it would be a very disappointing performance from Italy if that happens...

Italy, on their usual form, should be able to beat the scots in teh highlands...

I think at home they are really hard opposition, as you found last time.

I don't think they will beat you but they could well get a draw.

Away from home they seem to fold though.

    Yeah, thats so silly.

People are reacting to the Ukraine they saw at the WC, not the Ukraine in the qualifying...

I would be so much more comfortable of Italys chances if there were 2 Scotlands's in the group instead of Ukraine & Scotland.

thats true....3-2 hmmm, unbeaten by Italy in almost 30 years, and quite a few times we beat you during the last 30 yrs, most recently a complete and clean victory a few days back. We had more trouble in Bosnia than we did against Italy.
