Well no great players are ever likely to sign for Hibs. Riordan is genius though. I'm stoked that he has come back to us.
I didn't want us to sign Colin Nish because I thought he was a bit pish, but he's done well enough I guess. Still wouldn't have in the first team mind.

First one that cross to my mind is Luis Enrique, only because he was a RM player, but what a buy he turned out to be for us, amazing.

Shaun Maloney, really thought he'd do well down here but after his time at Villa it seems not.
Didnt really want us to sign Huth..and he's done alrightish I suppose. Still, I'd probably sell him if the right offer was there.

he is my favorite player of all time!
They're not my team but i thought that Shevchenko would be good at Chelsea but it didn't work out. Hopefully Milan can get the best out of him again.

Carlos Alberto.
Ask chrissi about that one.
Then I never would have thought that Vincent Kompany wouldn't work out here. I guess it just wasn't meant to be or something.

Morientes. The man just looked phenomenal for Monaco and obviously for Real alongside Raul. Really thought he was going to be hit at Anfield.
Though I don't blame him soley on being a flop at Liverpool. The thing was he never got the service out wide to utilise his strengths.
Crouch is one who proved me wrong. I was dead set againist his move to us apon hearing we could be signing him.

Obviously Sheva was the main one. I didn't think he'd be scoring 40+ a season like some were saying, due to his age and lack of pace, but I didn't think he'd only be scoring 15 in all competitions. Had some very good Champions League performances but was absolutely wank in the Premier League.
Didn't want us to sign Torres when we became a name in the frame for his signature. Saw him play a few times in La Liga and while he had plenty of pace and good movement, I didn't think he would have the strength to cut it in this league.

Re: Players that you thought are great
After WC98 I really wanted us to sign Davor Suker. Thought he would work well as a replacement for Collymore/ partner for Fowler.
Owen came through the youth team and Fowler got injured. By the time Suker got to England he was pretty poor.
Agree with Ade on Crouch.

Paul Robinson.
Just before we signed van der Sar I was really keen for us to sign Robinson.

Re: Players that you thought are great
I was surprised, and not particularly optimistic, when I heard, in early 1996, that we had signed David Batty. I was young at the time, nine years old, and so maybe I didn't see the bigger picture - it seemed to me like a very un-Keegan signing; Batty wasn't an attacking player, and his reputation was as an even quite aggressive tough-tackling defensive midfielder. But he proved a really good buy. Batty was surprisingly good on the ball - he had decent feet; he could break forward quite effectively; and his passing was excellent, so crisp especially over short distances.
I guess Darren Peacock, who we signed a few years earlier from QPR, was in the same sort of mould - he wasn't a particularly glamorous signing, and he was known as a sort of no-nonsense defender, but, after an unsure start, he proved a good partner to Phillipe Albert. With those two and Steve Howey, we had three excellent centre backs in those days.

Re: Players that you thought are great
I wasn't very happy about Inter signing Cambiasso, even tho it was for free... I had thought at that time that we are collecting mediocre midfielders as usual so that we can spend all our money on too many strikers. Yeah, thats one player who has surprised me the most. He now is my fav current Inter player after Zanetti.

Dirk Kuyt, went to Pool instead and we ended up with Oba Martins. Lucky escape.
Zenden, went to Chelsea at the last minute and we ended up with Laurent Robert. Lucky escape.

Neither Curtis Davies or Nigel Reo-Coker thrilled me, but both have done pretty good (better than I expected anyhow)
I thought Baros was a good signing. Nu-uh.

Zenden was a quality player if played in the right position Chelsea and Liverpool were just too stupid to do it.

He was OK, no more. Lacked the pace to be a wide player (just like Downing) and didn't have either the guile or strength to play in the middle.
Only the second best player with a surname beginning with 'Z' ever poached from Boro by Liverpool.

He had the guile and strength to play in the middle for us...managed to help get us into Europe playing there.
He was $h!t wide for us too.

Re: Players that you thought are great
Yeah? But he wasn't good enough there for us. He was also physically in decline by the time he signed for us, so he probably was better for you than he was for us, I think.

Well, he definitely was better for us...but then, once we'd found his best position we gave him regular games in it. How many games did he actually start for Liverpool? Not very many I imagine..not that I would expect you to, he probably wasnt as good as the other central midfielders you had. It just seems stupid to me, signing a player who was blatantly shite on the wing then trying to play him in the wing. Then giving him maybe the odd chance to play central. Stupid of him too, silly Dutch c**t.

He'd probably have done well for Newcastle though, if they'd played him central and give him games. You could've had both.

In terms of ability, maybe. But Robert's attitude and consistency were poor, so ultimately neither was good enough.
for about 6 months after you signed Robert I was quite jealous. Not now.

At the time you were probably jealous of most of our players, you were eating our dust.

Re: Players that you thought are great
Zenden wasnt a left back for us and he got player of the year.
As for Mendi..he had one really really good season. Other than that, got alot of injuries..never recovered to the point he could keep up with the pace of the premiership but still put in the odd good performance. His best game was probably vs Man Utd when we hammered them..and he was heavily involved in the Carling Cup win. He was a really good player who just couldnt keep up at the end of the day. Very much respected by the fans though..always tried his best, never moaned if he was left out..helped out the young players in training..and still lives in the area even now.
