I'm happy that Enrique is starting at left back again, and the rest of the team is as expected. It would be nice to see N'Zogbia sometime tonight. And hopefully Martins and Shola perform.

O, hell! How does Nicky Butt walk straight back into our side? I think Kinnear is too negative - obviously, he doesn't want to lose games, he doesn't want to damage himself in any way, and I'm sure if we manage to scrap a draw tonight he'll be pumping his fists at the end of the game; he'll declare it a great day in the club's history; and he'll spout some more nonsense for the sake of himself and the board either after the match or tomorrow morning - and perhaps he sees Butt as a solid option tonight against a good team. But it leaves us without our best passer of the ball; more, Guthrie looks better defensively than Butt has done for a long time; and he and Barton showed some potential together against West Brom. And it isn't as though Barry and Reo Coker are a particularly attacking central midfield pair. We could really do with Butt being crocked for a longer period.
I'm happy that Enrique is starting at left back again, and the rest of the team is as expected. It would be nice to see N'Zogbia sometime tonight. And hopefully Martins and Shola perform.

I don't know if N'Zogbia still wants a move. I haven't heard anything recently, though I'm sure some take it as read that he would still like to move to London. He hasn't started a game for us for a while, and in the last few matches, he hasn't even been appearing from the bench - Duff has his place on the left wing, and I think N'Zogbia is potentially much more capable and dangerous, but Duff has been playing okay, working hard, and he does look fitter this season. If things remain like they've been the past few matches, I struggle to see him staying beyond January, but who knows what the situation is.

We just don't link well or support each other properly in attack. The players play too spread out; the midfield and defence don't support the forwards enough; our passing isn't quick nor precise enough. Maybe the forward players should make more runs beyond the opposition's defence, but we don't hold the ball close enough to the opposition's area to validate that. We haven't had a bad half, but Villa have edged the game and they've had the better chances - Agbonlahor should have scored and Young did Beye before forcing a good block from Given.
Martins has been lively, he's been one of our better players, but his shooting has been all over the place. I do like Enrique at left back. Taylor is pretty capable when he steps out of the defence and moves forward - he can make some good, direct runs and he has a sense for quick one-twos - he should do it more often, even if it can leave us a little exposed. Barton is really battling in the centre of the pitch - his tackling has been excellent, but he and Butt can't pass the ball.

Martins is ridiculous at times..has he no brain? He did Cuellar and would surely have been able to advance a bit given that he's lightning quick, but instead he just smashes the ball from about 25 yards over the bar. Mongoloid.

Hmm, Barton is alrite with his passes, sure there were couple of careless passes to find Gutierrez and Duff. But Newcastle looked okay without the ball. But as you said, Villa had better chances with good movement by Agbonlahor but a poor "dummy", Young's good first touch lays it to shoot, could have gone in if not for Given. But, One thing I'd vouch for, Ameobi's lack of clever movement. Owen would have helped the case better. Carew is drawing out the defense with him creating space for others, Ameobi needs to do that for Newcastle.

He goes for Glory. But he's clearly talented.

I think, if Owen was fully fit, he'd have started tonight. I agree regarding Ameobi, but the other issue is that our midfielders don't really fill the spaces our forwards do leave or create - we don't really have a central midfielder who gets into the opposition penalty area at all regularly, and Gutierrez doesn't get into goalscoring positions often (Duff gets into such positions a bit more often, but he fluffs whatever opportunities he gets).
Martins can, at times, play some really patient football - his build up play can be very good, and I think he does have a decent footballing brain - but he gets a rush of blood when he's able to shoot from distance. He can finish superbly when through on goal, but he lashes at the ball from distance.

Martins! A lovely goal, but the celebration was dreadful - he landed on his backside, then Shola tried to pick him up by the crotch.

Proved it though hasnt it? If he actually used his brain more he'd score more..set himself and shoot..rather than just smash it because he's seen a gap in the defence.

A really nice pass from Martins to Shola there. We've played very well this half, and we have looked solid at the back too - hopefully we can hold the ball a bit in the last ten minutes.

Newcastle dominate. Sure, Villa got two clear chances in first half, but Newcastle dominated possession in second half, and tackled Villa out of their half.
