As far I was aware Gallas was given another chance of captaincy in the summer on the condition that there were no more bad incidents. Obviously his comments made ten days ago was the last straw as far a Wenger was concerned.
What Gallas did was wrong. I agreed with his sentiments, but you don't ever come out and make the club look like a complete circus. He had to go regardless if it made Wenger look bad by giving him another shot.
Strangely enough I actually felt a bit sorry for Gallas at the time, he isn't a captain by nature, that is obvious enough. In the end it was too much for him. Most clubs have numerous players that have strong leadership qualities. Even though Gary Neville had been injured for a long time, Man Utd have around five personalities that could easily step into his shoes. Most of the time they are all on the pitch together anyway, so regardless of who is wearing the armband they have strong direction. Tony Adams had Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn, Steve Bould and even players like Alan Smith. Patrick Vieira had the likes of Sol Campbell, Martin Keown, Ray Parlour, Dennis Bergkamp as well as players like Ashley Cole and Jens Lehmann who were not exactly captain material but they had plenty of character and bottle. Who did Gallas have? No wonder he folded in the manner he did.
Amy Lawrence wrote an exellent article a week ago saying we lack character throughout the entire squad. Wenger is solely responsible for the players in the squad, he needs to sort this out sharpish otherwise its UEFA Cup for us next season.
