the English teams were unbeatable in the Champions League knockout stages last season, Chelsea were unlucky to lose on penalties to Man United, Liverpool were unlucky to lose in extra time to Chelsea and Arsenal lost to Liverpool in part thanks to some questionable refereeing. It would be a shock to me if all four didn't make the quarter finals again, that's not arrogance on my part, merely my faith in the strength of the teams. All four have their flaws, of course, but so do their opponents. Arsenal have undoubted quality and have proven their big game mentality in recent seasons, as have Liverpool. Chelsea should be comfortable favourites, especially if they strengthen in January, while Man United will always be able to rely on the two R's. Ronaldo and the ref.

If an English club goes out in this round of the CL it will be Liverpool or Chelsea, and if that happens it will only strengthen their title charge which is no bad thing.

Rest of the ties, I'd say Barcelona and Bayern are comfortable favourites and I couldn't chose between the others, Atletico and Villareal don't look anything special and I haven't watched Panathinaikos at all this season.

Uefa cup is impossible to judge since I don't know how seriously the managers take the competition. Of the English teams only Spurs currently have sufficient depth of squad to take this competition remotely seriously, Aston Villa's current squad is 3 or 4 injuries away from crisis and I don't see a UEFA Cup run helping them, if they're still in contention for a Champions League spot it will be interesting to see how seriously the manager takes the competition. Spurs, Villa and Man City are all capable of winning the competition but despite having the best team, Villa have by far the weakest squad.

Manchester City will be a rule unto themselves and no one has any idea who they will sign in January and how many of them will be available for the knockout stages. If they're going to get a new manager it would be sensible to get one now, let him sign his players in January and blood them in the league for the rest of the season. Whatever happens, I don't see City struggling to field a decent team in this competition and signings are a given so I'd see them as reasonable competitors regardless of league form or managerial instability.

of course the draw is important treacle, but an English side has reached the Champions League final every season for as long as Punty can remember so it's no accident and they have to be considered favourites, don't take it personally, I'm sure Inter Milan are lovely but if you couldn't beat little old Liverpool last season I don't know why you'd take exception to me predicting that super-duper super club Manchester will knock you out over 2 legs this year. My guess is they are as good as, if not better than Panathinaikos.

Mourinho's mind games will get to the United players and it's about time Inter showed what they're made of in the champions league.

Juventus will play a really tight game against Chelsea which they wont like and I can see Juventus nicking the win after a draw in the first leg..

I am glad atletico fans are so happy for the draw, they think they are as good as beeing in the second round already. We'll see who will be laughing at the end of tthe round.

could say the same about Inter in 03 and 05. They got knocked out by Milan both times. I'm sure they would've fancied their chances against any other side.

My guess would be because of the teams' respective form.

I'm still not convinced by Inter's midfield tbh. They lack creativity.

Agree with that except I fancy Juve going through courtesy of Delp masterclass over 2 legs and Atleti choking, it's bound to happen IMO.
