The appointment is only temporary until the football association finds someone who will take the job permanently, but since they're clearly inept he probably will have the job for some time.
Don't know how famous he is on this board, but in the 90s he made Norway somewhat competetive with his very distinctive football philosophy. The major achievements were winning the WC94 qualifying group easily, ahead of Netherlands, England, Poland and Turkey. And making Norway the only team with never to have lost against Brazil and having a positive head-to-head comparison with them, the dramatic 2-1 win in WC98 is still being worshiped in this country.
The rest of the world despised Norway for their unusual approach to the game. Not so strange when you play 4-5-1 with tall, strong and clumsy defenders, forwards AND wingers, and frenetic midfielders who didn't really have so much skill. But since Norway never will have the best players around the decisions were reasonable, playing to the strengths the team had turned out in our favor.
More about his philosophy and characteristics can be read in this article, it explains things very well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egil_Olsen
Lets see what Egil Olsen can make of Norway's situation..we have to get some good results to finish second in the current qualifying group, and the team haven't won a game since 2007. I believe he will try to implement his approach very quickly, it will be very interesting to see how Norway and the opponents will react since football has changed since his first stint.
I don't have any high expectations since our current players mostly stink though, it will take a miracle.
