Goal.com Poll Results: An Italian Team To Win The UEFA Cup
The readers have spoken, and it is reckoned that an Italian side will claim glory in the final instalment of the UEFA Cup under its current guise... Yesterday, we asked the readers from which country they believe this season's UEFA Cup winners will come. From next season on, the UEFA Cup in its current manifestation will be no more; we will witness the inauguration of the Europa League. Therefore, some added prestige is on offer with a win in this year's competition - a tournament that has been dominated by Spain and Russia in the past five years.
However, Italy as a nation has the highest UEFA Cup pedigree, providing nine winners and six runners up throughout the history of the competition. No team from the peninsula has claimed glory in a decade though; Parma were the last Calcio exponents to win the trophy, when they trounced Marseille in Moscow in 1999. It seems, however, that the readers are convinced that this will be the year of the Italians. AC Milan are the highest profile club left in the competition and drew 1-1 in Bremen last night in the last 32 first-leg tie. Also present and correct are Fiorentina, Sampdoria and Udinese, although 'Doria are on the verge of an exit as a result of their home reverse at the hands of Metalist.
Nonetheless, it would come as no surprise to the readers of Goal.com should an Italian team claim the win in Istanbul next May. Here are the results in full:
Which Country Will Provide The UEFA Cup Winners?
Italy 38.38%
England 16.16%
Germany 13.13%
Other 13.13%
Spain 9.09%
Russia 5.05%
Netherlands 4.04%
France 1.01%

Don't think England are very likely. Man City the best bet, due to easiest draw (two consecutive Danish clubs in the KOs! After getting a bye into the tournament! Absurd!), but if they're as bad away in Europe as they are in league, they'll be out soon enough.
I don't think Villa will get through in Russia - CSKA'll have the experience to see it out - while Spurs are Spurs.
Not convinced Milan will care enough. Same goes for other Italians.
I fancy Hamburg or one of the Russians/Ukranians.

I fancy CSKA actually. They'll be fresh coming in to the KOs given the long break in the Russian league

Well that one danish team deserved to go through much more then Man City in my opinion and played quite a deal better in both legs. FCK has a fine chance imo because Man City is not a great team in my eyes allthough they have good players. That fact means that unless they grow with time they will prob struggle when they meet a more organised team.
But I get what you mean with them meeting two danish teams.
Also wanted to give props to AAB who whopped Deportivo last night 3-0. Great result and allthough danish teams have a loser mentality I can't even see them waisting this. Don't particular rate this Depor team but nice that AAB can get some publicity.
What happened with Villa last night? Expected more for you guys. Figured if a english team was going to win it, it would be Aston Villa allthough the fight to keep in the Cl places would prob be strengthened by going out.

If I had to pick a team now, I'd say Fiorentina. But I'm not sure really. I have to say when the draw was made I thought Spuds would be knocked out by Shaktar and Villa would possibly have been edged out by CSK.
City have easy draws and will probably make the last 8.
But then I thought Wolfsburg would do PSG and likewise with Liege Braga, so what do I know really. Any of the Portuguese lot care to say a bit about Braga?

Yeah i have been really impressed with Standard this season and thought they would go far but it was a brilliant result for Braga and now surley they will get through.

Italy are strongest with Milan and Fiorentina. We are shit, and have now fucked up our chances...after losing 1-0 at home to Metalist.
Aston Villa have had a couple of minor faults lately...City have been awful in many games, and Tottenham are Tottenham.
Wouldn't really back and English side. If I picked 3 it'd be Milan, Fiorentina and Hamburg.

Mentalist is a pretty strong team tbh, I saw some report about them. They have like 20 training fields! For each player a whole fucking pitch.
I reckon Man City will win it, Italian teams dont take it serious.

Definitely won't be a Spanish team. Valencia have too many problems at the moment and no way are Deportivo coming back again AaB after a disastrous first leg.

I didn't think we played badly. Conceded a soft goal (from a defensive perspective), with reserve players mainly at fault, but were on top for big chunks of the rest of the match. Made a few chances, but didn't finish particularly well.Super Madrid wrote:What happened with Villa last night? Expected more for you guys. This was always going to be a hard tie, their team contains a lot more European/international experience - from our lineup only Barry, Petrov, Carew have any real international experience, and Barry hasn't played in Europe for many years. With a few of our experienced players injured, and following a tough game on Sunday, plus half an eye to an even tougher one on Saturday - well, there's plenty of excuses! So, a draw was not bad or unexpected.
The way it's going in the league, UEFA was always going to be dropped to 2nd priority. Simply do not have the squad to compete in both right now. Still, I think we got a chance of progressing, we're certainly capable of scoring away from home, but it's hard to know how the players will fare in Russia and CSKA will be favourites to see the tie out.

I cannot see beyond Milan at the mo. Contrary to what most people think, IMO Milan will give this a very serious attempt. Sure, they rested Pato, Jankulovski and Beckham yesterday, but thats coz they can afford to rest a few and still field a very competitive team. This is the last year of UEFA Cup, the only competition Milan have never won... and now Milan have nothing else to play for this season. Out of scudetto race, out of coppa. Galliani will want to give some cheer to the clubs fans.
My top 3 contenders would be:
1. Milan
2. CSKA
3. Hamburg
Fiorentina will find it difficult, Prandelli needs to understand that in europe and against any top team, he needs to play a more physical game... playing without a DM is suicide. Fiorentina manage to power through the "smaller" teams in Serie A due to their sheer skill and brilliance. But in big games, you need to have some steel. Fiorentina completely lack steel. Thats why they have such a poor record against even the Italian top 3-4 teams.

Well ajax hardly is a top team, besides they havent won in Italy for 14 years already!
All Dutch clubs have it hard there, the last that won in Italy was Feyenoord in 2002! Cant remember against who that was though.

Isn't Melo a DM?
Fiorentina lack a decent CB to partner Gamberini, and I'm not sure about their RB position, but aside from that they are a decent team and unlike some of the other so called 'top' teams (Milan, Valencia) they actually play a strong lineup.
I wouldn't rule out Udinese as a dark horse either. They have a good XI on paper and are starting to show signs in a chance of form again. I imagine they will field a strong side too considering they are unlikely to make Europe next year.

With the players we have, it shouldn't have been a problem beating them at home. A defeat at home to Metalist is a poor result. Away from home is a different matter.

I wouldn't have thought of Felipe Melo as a DM based on his play in Almeria last year. But I thought Kuzmanovic was meant to be a DM.

Melo is more of a deep playmaking midfielder, not exactly a Gattuso or a Mascherano. Donadel and Almiron are the closest they have to DMs. Thankfully, Prandelli has started playing Donadel more often.
I think their RB position is decently covered with Comotto and Zauri, and Jorgenson can also play there if needed. Yeah, a CB is derperately needed as well, just how long can Dainelli continue!! CB should be absolute priority! I think they will nick one of Inter's CB's this summer, when IMO one or two of Matrix/Rivas/Burdisso will become surplus to our requirements.

Neither is a DM. Kuzmanovic's best position is in the right wing, tho he can play midfield.
Donadel is their DM, tho he is more of a midfield marshall - a cross between a Pilrlo and a De Rossi. If anyone remembers Euro U21 in 2004, Donadel had captained the azzurini to victory.

Fiorentina have been strongly linked with Ivanovic, who is unahppy at being 4th choice at Chelsea.

Braga is a strong team and since they are not well known in europe they are pretty much underated and can use that in their favor.
If they can win it? I wouldn´t go as far as to say that but one thing i am sure about them, they can beat any of the teams left in the competition including the hype ones in a good day and besides they are an attacking team and always play to win so a good show is always a possibility.
If their attack are inspired they can be unstopable at times. The Standard game was impressive with great goals and the Belgium team are not pushovers as was shown in the early CL games this year.
Still, this is a knockout stage so anything is possible for any team.

Their keeper is good, i think he is the first choice in the national side at the moment.
Renteria is a very good striker (Porto loan ) that creates a lot of chances but still misses a lot of goals, he is young though.
In the midfield Stelvio as DM and Luis Aguiar as a creative player are the main players but above all this team focus more on the team than in individualities, they rely more on team work as a whole than a target man.
They are a very good team, they just need to be a little more consistent at times and play with the result. You need to do that in europe and they sometimes attack too much. The motivation needs to be improved too, they play better against big/known sides that unknown ones.
If they go through, wich is most likely, it would be interesting if they play one of the big sharks.

0-1... I heard Ajax were bollock lastnight but Fiorentina were SHOCKING.... Gilardino has he ever scored a goal in his life?
Btw the Braga result really surprised me. Standard is a really good team!
FC Twente under STVE MCLAREN is also playing fabulous football. They completely outplayed olympique marseille last night... It should have been at least 0-3. They wont win it but they'll reahc the quarters at least!
To be honest it wasn't a real surprise. Most of the times Dutch team play well against French teams

Well Ajax had to do what they had to do, they weren’t going to go gung-ho or leave them exposed to any potential dangerous attacks from Fiorentina, that aside Fiorentina had some good chances especially Montolivo in the first half if they had taken their chances we wouldn’t be discussing their performance. Towards the end of the second half Ajax had good chances themselves, I like to think last night was an unexpected victory a bonus if you will, would have taken a draw at best.
Van Basten sums it up: "In sport it's all about winning, not how you win. Fiorentina had a number of chances, but in the end we took a win home with us. Given the number of absentees we had, we did not really expect that. We fought for each other."
