I'm expecting a Pana win...key will be how many they can get at El Madrigal, because Villarreal's defense is poor without Gonzalo.

Gonzalo is out through injury, Capdevila is suspended for the first leg. Nihat is just coming back from injury. Not the best moment for Villarreal. I think it will probably be 1-1 on the night and then Panathinaikos to win the tie in the second leg.

Great strike from Karagounis, good lay off from mantzios who did an awesome bit of skill in teh box later only to then hit his shot straight at the keeper.

Rossi was very lively - niggly game but very entertaining especially when a Villarreal player pushed Ten Caate near the end and it looked like it may kick off.

Gilberto still can't pass and Pires is still a cheat.

That was great. Mantzios can be brilliant at times but sadly he has basically wasted his potential because of his personality.

That is the main difference about Cl football today that everbody is pretty much following the template laid out by Porto in 04,Liverpool in 05, Greece in 04.

Very surprising result to be honest. Not playing that great of late, missing their best defender. And as it turns out they become the first Spanish team ever to beat Panathinaikos in Greece. And to players I didn't even really rate as good enough to help them in their CL campaign did the business tonight - Ibagaza and Joseba Llorente.

    Great win!

I'm still amazed Matigol hasn't pushed on and broken into the side yet. Has a lot of talent, he may well move on this season. Needs regular football.

Gonzalo was making too many mistakes anyway, i don't think he's vital to what happens.

It was the Ibagaza show for Villarreal, He scored and provided the assist for llorent's goal, and also has a goal wrongfully disallowed.

Once he settles villarreal will have to excellent midgets on the wings.

Yeah big surprise when I saw this had become a 1-2 after being 1-1 around the 60th minute. I guess Pana couldn't cope with the home fans' pressure of getting the 2nd goal? Or Villarreal just played better?

Still, with that defense, not too many sides will worry about facing them in the next round.

Sorry Pierre, I just saw that. Smile

Well, the thing with Mantzios is that he acts like a primadonna and doesn't really care or put in the effort, most of the times. He was considered a big prospect when he was at Panionios and at the beginning of his career with Panathinaikos he was impressive and I remember the media was praising him week in, week out. After that, it mostly went downhill for him, it was as if he didn't care anymore and eventually became 3rd/4th choice(at one point he was also loaned out) until he finally manage to break in to Ten Cate squad this year(cause the Brazilian target-man Panathinaikos bought proved to be a big flop).

Villarreal were just better and should have been 1/2 up from the 1st half.

There defense is a worry, but they do defense well as a team, especially in europe and with gonzalo back they will give teams a real go.

Could they reach the SM's again?

    cheers
If there is one spanish teams that I wanted to go through it was Villarreal. That is the team I cheer the most far and like most I thought Pana would take them out but they went away and played well. This is the real 20.century style football we are talking about and it would be great to see such a team go far in the Cl. Gonzalo looks heavier now then he used to and I don't think he is the defender he was in 2006 but nonetheless he can still add to this team. Surprised Ibagaza could do so well for them because I wasn't quite if he was CL level and llorente aswell. Their real test will be when they meet tougher teams.

Also agree with Calidad that it is strange about Fernandez because I was sure he was going to deliver. Hopefully he will get more of a chance now that they will have to rotate. Similar case to Banega allthough this has been going on for a longer time.

Well in a way yes because you have to support your team and even if you know the benefits it is hard to root against your team. Lets say that you have been told that if Kuyt costs a mistake against Man Utd he will be gone. Now on one hand you know that it will cost you the game but on the other hand you know that in the long term removing Kuyt will give you the chance to get the winger you need.

Of course this is assuming you don't like Kuyt and you think Liverpool need a new right winger.

Same thing with Real Madrid because if we keep having succes(relative) then papers etc. will jump in joy and make it seem better then it really is which in the end will lead to nothing being done. Also I know it is kind of strange way to work but with Real Madrid everything is in extremmes so in order to have great succes you need great faliure.

Gonzalo needs to drop a few pounds, because he as lost a step this season and its the fact that he has good pace over 5 yards combine with his reading and positioning that made him so special.
