Valencia's financial troubles : Players for sale Empty Valencia's financial troubles : Players for sale

Post by DS Fri Mar 06, 2009 10:05 am

Valencia may be forced to sell players to resolve the club's dire
financial problems, the Primera Liga side's new chief executive Javier
    Gomez has revealed.
Gomez was promoted to CEO after a board meeting on Wednesday and
Spanish media reported it was with the support of Spanish bank Bancaja,
the club's major creditor owed 240m euros out of a total debt of around
    450m euros.
Bancaja refused to comment on dealings with a client and Valencia have declined to answer questions about their finances.
"The club is in a very delicate situation. It has to control spending,
grow income and sell assets," Gomez told a news conference on Wednesday
    evening.

Valencia's prize assets include Spain striker David Villa and international team mate David Silva.
Gomez did not rule out player sales when asked.
"Obviously we will consider that type of action," he said. "We have to
control costs and the biggest cost in a football club is maintaining a
    team."

President Vicente Soriano will continue in the post and he denied he had had his powers trimmed with the promotion of Gomez.
Soriano replaced Juan Soler as president last July but his plans to
sell the land around the Mestalla to help finance the move to a new
stadium that is under construction have not come through.
Valencia, twice Champions League finalists, have been forced to delay
payments to their players and construction work on the new stadium has
    also stopped.

Gomez added: "Before, we had a plan that was based purely on selling
the land, now we need to seek alternatives. We need to win back
    credibility with the financial institutions."
However, Gomez was unable to give a date for when the money owed to the
players would be paid. Spanish media reported the figure was 15 million
    euros.

Valencia's financial problems have been accompanied by a dip in form.
They are out of the UEFA Cup and the King's Cup, which they won last
year, and have slipped down to sixth in the league.
A recent study of Primera Liga club accounts, based on the 2006/7
figures, concluded that many were living beyond their means and that
the global economic crisis would push some towards insolvency unless
they changed the way they operated.

Jose Maria Gay, a professor at the University of Barcelona, calculated
the combined debt of the 20 clubs in Spain's top division in 2006/7 was
    2.78 billion euros.

Even if this is wrong and exaggerated, there is still a problem at Valencia.

So will they sell their prize assets like Villa, Silva, Fernandes, Albiol, Mata etc ?

If they do where do you think they will end up ?

How is it fraud? It's just like the corporate world - some companies have less debt, some have more. You are still competing with them, you just have to deal with it and find other sources of competitive advantage.

I don't think there'll be a clear-out of their squad. Maybe they'll lose 2 or 3 big name players like Villa, Silva, and Joaquin, but definitely not half the starting lineup as this article suggests.

Basically Valencia have suffered from bad timing - they were hoping to keep the club afloat by selling off the land of the old ground, but with the global financial collapse their plans have been badly hit.

Dutch clubs are not allowed to build up so much debt, they're taken out of the league if they would...

EPL and Serie A are just as bad btw.

I think they'll try and keep hold of the two Davids. Everyone else would have a reasonable price though IMO.

I'd certainly expect a few EPL clubs to be sniffing around Fernandes' bum hole in the summer.

Wrong. Serie A has a strong financial guideline that every club has to meet in order to play. This has been implemented in the last 7-8 years, quite strictly. Clubs who have violated these norms have been demoted.

I'd take Fernades. No need for Villa, plus it's not like they'll sell him cheaply even with financial trouble. Never rated Joaquin tbh.

I rate Joaquin but he is a bit of a luxury and IMO would work better as a bigger fish in a smaller pond.

IMO Man citeh will make a serious move for either Silva, Villa or both in the summer.

How sad is this. Valencia are a big club, and they are being torn apart. There seems to be a few clubs now in Spain that are struggling. In Italy there are many.

it would be sad to see cracks live Silva and villa leave spain, but if thats what they have to do, then they must do it.

with some going scouting i'm sure they can find a few players around Europe and south america, who can replace them in a few years.

I was mentioning in another thread, Valencia still have not paid for Joaquin even though he joined them back in the summer of 2006. They may be forced to "return" him to Betis if they can't make the payments by summer.

Villa seems quite committed to Valencia I think they will only sell him if it gets really desperate and then I think he will go to Madrid or Barcelona, he doesn't seem interested in a move abroad.

Silva I think they would sell. He seems have a lot of suitors but even though he is a good player, he has been injured a lot of the last 18 months and they have done fine without him.

Others they would probably try and sell first would be Maduro, Fernandes, Viana, Miguel, Albiol, Banega, Zigic

they are not going to try a sell their entire 1st team, i'm sure even if they sell players, they would want to finish in the top 6 next season, so i don't see them sell more than 2/3 1st team players players, the rest will be the like of zigic and benega.

    Silva
Villa-can't see him staying in spain if he leave, because he won't go to real and barca seems to have worked things out with eto'o.

who will they buy to replace villa?, they will need someone that knows
the league, the only person that comes to mind is Llorente.

Negredo is a good shout too, jaime.

it would make no sense to sell their best player unless it's to Man City. 2.78 billion euros in debt selling a few players isn't going to touch the sides.

Llorente, Negredo I'd say are the two most likely candidates from la Liga. Before we sold Soldado to Getafe, Valencia were rumoured to be in for him (Soldado is from there). Another name that I would say is Cavenaghi. He's been very good in France but he still seems to be flying a bit under the radar. I think Valencia might go for a player like him.

That's the estimated debt (according to this one study) for the whole first division, not just Valencia. ok

    my bad, sped read it.

Still, €450m, they could sell their first team for €30m each and still be €100m short, and fucked.

Post by Jaime Fri Mar 06, 2009 3:31 pm

Yeah, I mean they have to go one step at a time. If they can maybe get it down to around €300m with the sales of Silva and some of the fringe players (Silva - 30m, Zigic - 20m, Fernandes - 20m, Albiol - 20m, Banega - 15m, Miguel - 15m, Maduro - 5m, Viana - 5m, Del Horno - 5m) that would be a good start. I think it would be really essential for them to qualify for the CL as well to secure those revenues. And then they need to start being sensible with the money they spend on players. Look at these figures on transfers since 2004:

    Stefano Fiore - €8m
    Bernardo Corradi - €10m
    Marco di Vaio - €10m
    Francesco Tavano - €9m
    Joaquin - €25m
    Nicola Zigic - €15m
    Javier Arizmendi - €6m
    Ever Banega - €17m
    Hedwiges Maduro - €18m

All but Joaquin have turned out to be marginal figures and even Joaquin they really overpaid for. The only good piece of business they did was buying David Villa for €12m and Juan Mata for free.

    Silly Glenn. Rolling Eyes

They don't need to wipe it all out, they just need to make it manageable. Atleast less than what the club is worth.

And of course they were really stupid to start the new stadium before finalising the sale of the Mestalla. If they can sell Mestalla, then I think they'll be ok. But who knows if that will happen or not.

Although they're in trouble, as long as they sell Mestalla, soon, the debt should be manageable. By selling either Villa or Silva they ensuring that Villarreal, Sevilla and Atletico will finish ahead of them in the race for the CL spots.

Glennathinaikos wrote:who's going to pay 20m for Zigic?

They should be able to get, at least, 7-8 million € for him.
