My thoughts on the game tonight:
What can I say really. Firstly, credit where it's due. Chelsea outclassed us tonight, plain and simple. Since our goal they were first to every ball, passed it around better, looked more threatening and took advantage of some really poor defending.
It's strange because as soon as we scored the players seemed to think the match was over which is really unusual for a Liverpool team and even more unusual for a Benitez team. Normally we stay 100% focused throughout the 90 minutes but after Torres scored we were sloppy, we made stupid mistakes, we couldn't find any ryhthm and we never looked like getting another goal.
Hiddink set his Chelsea side up remarkably well. There was no space for Liverpool. We've seen in recent weeks Gerrard and Torres bursting into acres of space and having time to manufacture something special- tonight they didn't have a moment to think. Essien was outstanding and did what Mascherano does for us, stay tight to the danger man, make sure he's not getting any time and space and stay strong. It was a big miss not having Mascherano tonight, say what you like about Lucas, he simply hasn't got the strength nor ability to last 90 minutes in a midfield with Essien and Ballack who absolutely crunched him.
Drogba was like the Drogba of old. He missed a few particularly good chances early on but apart from that he held the ball up very well, he worked hard, he always caused a problem for Skrtel (who I believe had a very poor game by his standards and may be tiring a little bit) and his goal was typical Drogba, very much like the one he scored at the Bridge last year in the semi final, beats his man with strength and determination and gets on the end of a finely placed ball from Malouda.
There's no doubting now the task is improbable, near impossible. If any team is going to go and get a 3-0 away win at one of the toughest grounds in Europe then yes it's Liverpool but to get a 3-0 win without reply against a Chelsea team who IMO will now feel invincible and go on to win this tournament is just surely beyond Liverpool. Even without Terry, Chelsea will have Carvalho back. Liverpool will give it a real go I'm sure about that but that 3rd goal tonight sadly has put us out the champions league which is really shocking for a Benitez team in the first leg.
Credit to Chelsea, really poor from Liverpool, goodnight.
