One of the biggest rivalrys in English football these days, the teams hate each other to be honest, I don't even think the managers like each other, sure they can shake hands for the camera but I think the fact that Mourinho never shook Benitez's hand in the last meeting shows their relationship is not as rosy as it seems.
Where did this rivalry start? obviously when Chelsea came into the Roman regime they were always going to be rivals with Liverpool for the top 4 places, but even before that a match at the bridge left a lot of Liverpool fans fuming, the last match of the 02/03 season when Liverpool were away to Chelsea, the winner claimed the final Champions league spot, despite Liverpool's early lead through Hyypia, Chelsea went on to win 2-1 which left Liverpool in a uefa cup place and Chelsea then got taken over by Abromavich shortly after.
But it was the 2004/2005 season that really sparked off the rivalry between the clubs, in the Premiership Liverpool felt cheated at Anfield when a clear penalty was not awarded to the home side, as the ball was crossed into the penalty area, Tiago clearly handballed it away from goal, Mike Riley put his whistle to his mouth but did not blow, Liverpool fans were outraged, the players couldn't believe it, why didn't Riley blow? perhaps he was scared of the Chelsea backlash? who knows? it cost Liverpool as Joe Cole went on to get he winner in a match that left the feeling between the two clubs even worse.
Then the rivalry came to Cardiff for the carling cup final of that year in which Liverpool took the early lead again, only to lose it late on when Gerrard scored an unfortunate own goal to let Chelsea back into it, Mourinho didn't help the cause by shushing the Liverpool fans, later going on to claim he was 'shushing the English press', ye right jose, he was sent off but was the happier manager by the end as Chelsea went on to win 3-2.
Liverpool finally got their own back in one of the greatest games in Liverpool's history, after battling through the champions league against Olympiacos, Leverkusen and Juventus, it was Chelsea who came to Anfield once again attempting to really anger the Anfield faithful, the atmosphere was argueably the best in Liverpools history, the Chelsea players probably didn't know what had hit them, Liverpool took the lead (despite what Mourinho says) through a contraversial Garcia goal, did it cross the line? In my opinion yes it did, it proved to be the winning goal and Liverpool went on to win the cup that year, Mourinho has never been able to accept that defeat and it created even more hatread between the clubs, if Liverpool fans felt cheated in the home premiership game with Chelsea that season, the Chelsea fans felt 10 times worse at the end of that tie.
in the 2005/2006 season it was Chelsea who got the better of Liverpool in the league, after humiliating them 4-1 at Anfield and then at the bridge controversy struck, it was Chelsea who won the game 2-0 but the match was marred by the sending off of Pepe Reina, after apprantly 'pushing' Robben in the face, the Dutchman rolled around like he had been shot, Reina was then sent off, replays showed Reina had merely flicked Robben, it was an act that has made him one of the most hated Chelsea players in Liverpool along with Didier Drogba...
But Liverpool did enjoy some success last season against Chelsea, in the champions league they managed to finish ahead of them in their group after drawing twice in the competition, but it was in the Fa cup where Liverpool really got some pride back against their rivals, in the semi finals the two teams met at Old Trafford, where Liverpool outclassed Chelsea in a 2-1 win, they then of course went on to win the cup itself.
At the start of this season Liverpool claimed a bit of silverware before the premiership had even got under way, in a 2-1 win against Chelsea in the community shield, although it wouldn't of mattered a great deal to Mourinho it is always nice to get a victory over your rivals.
But it was Chelsea who once again won the battle in the Premiership after a 1-0 victory at the bridge, a stunning Drogba strike.
Throw in the whole 'Gerrard to Chelsea' sagas and you've got yourself one hell of a rivalry.
which brings us nicely to this weekends game.
2 Chelsea 51
3 Liverpool 43
Prediciton Liverpool 1-0 Chelsea
