it would be funny if, after all this hoo-ha, Wilshere went on holiday during the tournament and died in a fire.

Spain have announced their squad for the U21 Championships:

GK: David De Gea Quintana (Atlético De Madrid) Diego Mariño Villar (Villarreal), Rubén Miño Peralta (Barcelona)

DF: Didac Vila Roselló (AC Milan), Víctor Ruiz Torre (SSC Napoli), Martín Montoya i Torralbo (Barcelona), Mikel San José Domínguez (Athletic club) Cesar Azpilicueta Tanco Álvaro Domínguez Soto (Atlético De Madrid), (Olympique De Marsella), Alberto Botia Rabasco y Jose Ángel Valdés Díaz (Sporting De Gijón)

MF: Ander Herrera Agüera (Zaragoza) Juan Mata García (Valencia CF), Diego Capel Trinidad (Sevilla), Daniel Parejo Muñoz (Getafe), Rubén Pérez del Mármol (Deportivo), Thiago Alcántara Do Nascimento (Barcelona), Javier Martinez Aguinaga (Athletic Club)

FW: Iker Muniain Goñi (Athletic Club), Emilio Nsue López (Mallorca), Adrián López Álvarez (Deportivo), Bojan Krkic Pérez y Jeffren Suarez Bermúdez (Barcelona)

Pretty strong squad. I probably would have picked Canales over Munain despite his limited playing time.

    ------------De Gea
    Azpili---Botia--Ruiz---Angel
    -----------Martinez
    --------Thiago--Parejo
    ------------Ander
    ---------Nsue--Bojan

would be what I go with.

Interesting that there are no Madrid players.

Tournament underway, first game is a rather uninteresting Belarus vs. Iceland. Denmark vs. Switzerland later, that should be a good one.

Big game tomorrow, England vs. Spain, who are massive pre-tournament favourites. The squad is extremely strong...many players are starters or make regular appearances for top 6 clubs in Spain, and quite a few have already played in Europe as well. Only the attack looks a bit questionable - who will bang in the goals if Bojan has his panic attacks again Question

Iceland missed three very good chances in a ten minute spell before the sending off/penalty incident.

    Likely England line-up this evening:

    Fielding

    Mancienne . . Smalling . . Jones . . Bertrand

    Henderson . . Muamba . . Rodwell

    Welbeck . . Sturridge . . Rose

So apparently Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara "added spice to the game against England when the Barcelona youngster claimed he had not heard of any of England's players apart from the absent Jack Wilshere and Micah Richards"

How has he not heard of Danny Rose??? So good that Woody Allen even made a film about him.

But seriously, had an England player admitted this most of us would be a little concerned about their insularity. That said, Spain must be favourites looking at the 2 sides- two of their players represented the senior squad at the World Cup, but unlike England's trio of Richards, Wilshere and Walcott haven't pulled out because they appear to value this competition and rightly so.

Still looks better than the England side. The midfield 3 of Muamba, Rodwell and Henderson doesn't strike me as one with fluidity- expect static lines.

Hope its a good game, having to slowly ween off football this summer with the prospect of barren months until august

BBC has Muamba and Rodwell on the bench:

    Fielding
    Walker-Mancienne-Smalling-Bertrand
    Cleverly-Jones-Henderson-Rose
    Welbeck-Sturridge

Might well be wrong with formation there. A few of them are pretty versatile..

Good start by England, incessant pressure on the ball forcing Spain into poor passes and rushed decisions. But they have to be careful not to burn out too quickly.

And Spain take the lead, from a corner! Now they start the possession game with lots of neat passing in midfield - Thiago and Ander Herrerra repeatedly showing some good touches.

England's lineup is so stereotypical - faster, stronger, and taller than Spain (and probably most sides in the tournament) but lacking any genuine "skill" player who can calm things down, do something good with the ball, and take control of the match. Too many direct runners and no real creator. Cleverley's probably the only player who can create with flair.

That Mancienne dude HSV signed isn't too shabby on the ball actually. England's defending on the corner that lead to the goal they conceded wasn't really good though.

Mancienne clearly bodychecked on that corner.

Conceding that goal is annoying as Spain will/are now doing exactly what Barcelona do - hundreds of passes sideways as a form of defending.

Thought it was quite even until that goal

Yes, he's still a bit overconfident and sometimes too casual with his passes, but he'll learn. His talent can't be just let go so easily.

On the other hand, Jeffren has been poor as usual. He really has no future at a top club, I'm surprised Barça even held on to him so long.
