That's the first real dodgy game I've seen him have this calender year - and he still displayed what a good footballer he is, charging down the wing and putting in a ball for Rooney on a plate, which was missed.
IMO the "Creme de la Creme" of Center Backs are: Nesta, Ayala, R.Ferdinand & Gallas.
Then half-a-step behind are the likes of Puyol, Maquez, Lucio, Samuel, Chivu, King, Andrade, Carvalho, Cannavaro, Thuram, Metzelder, K. Toure, Woodgate, etc.

But, still Mathijsen, Stam, Boulahrouz and Ooijer are all 1000x better than Rio!
Ooijer made a bad start at Blackburn but his form last year was superb and was better than Boulah, Stam and Mathijsen!

Rio is of course not the worst defender in the world but he is average at best, especially for a team as Man U or the England team! He makes too often mistakes defensively to be called a World Class defender!
I also know, it is much more difficult for Rio and Co to play in a squad that is more attacking than in a defensive team like Italy and Chelsea! Cannavaro had an outstanding World Cup but this had more to do with the defensive tactics of Lippi than with the skills of Cannavaro!
I think Rio fits perhaps better in a team that doesn't play very attacking like Man U but in a team where he can play with 4 men on a line, enough back up and where he is only there to stop the the forwards!!
Man U need defenders who can man mark and can defend forward! In england there are NO defenders who can man mark or defence more forwardly because English teams always play zone defence and with 4 men in the back. I hardly see a defender that can move to the midfield to support the midfield offensively and defencively. The problem with zone defence and to play with 4 defender on a line in an attacking team is, you leave too much space between the lines so defenders always come too much under pressure!
Man U have simply the wrong defenders! That's all what I want to say!
I was saying the same thing during the WC. I noticed that more with Rio in particular, everytime he had the ball, opposition players just drop back into midfield to reduce his passing option, instead of moving with the ball in midfield to create space he ends up hoofing it to crouch or surrendering possesssion.

I'm sure Rio, King Brown and Woodgate can do that - but only with Carrick & Hargreaves there. The others seem to have no Idea how to give the defence passing option, with the exception of Joe Cole.

I think Ayala is probably the most underrated CB. The guy has performed to a high level for nearly a century. And it usually takes something special to beat him (i.e Bergkamp or Owens pace) He reads the game so well, and is always so composed. He covered for Heinze a lot at the WC as well.
And he's had some serious injuries, especially knee ones, and is still going on.
