UEFA announced this morning the names of the players in contention for the UEFA Club Football Awards, which will be presented before the draw for the Champions League group stage at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco on August 27.

Barcelona dominate this year's awards, with half of the 12 contenders hailing from the treble-winning side.

The coaches of the 16 sides that reached the knock-out phase of last season's Champions League will now cast their votes for each position and will also nominate the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year.

UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year

    Petr Cech (Chelsea)
    Victor Valdes (Barcelona)
Edwin van der Sar (Manchester United)

UEFA Club Defender of the Year

    Gerard Pique (Barcelona)
    John Terry (Chelsea)
    Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United)

UEFA Club Midfielder of the Year

    Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)
    Xavi Hernandez (Barcelona)
    Andres Iniesta (Barcelona)

UEFA Club Forward of the Year

    Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona, now Inter)

My invite has just arrived, so I will be attending the Gala, the Draw and the Supercup itself. cheers

And Lerd, this was where I met Soriano last year and he told me how important Villa and Silva were to his vision of Valencia. In other words I know what I'm talking about, so kindly do the world a huge favour. FU

Is this cup important to Barca supporters? What do you expect from this match?

Im not going to get in the way of this fantasy you have of you being some big shot. But you seem to claim you've met everyone and i somewhat find it difficult to believe Some bloke at Valencia is going to give you the lowdown.

Fair enough. I'd like to see Eto'o get some honour, but it won't happen. Just can't see him beating Messi. If I get time while out there I'll try to let you all know how the individual managers voted. It is done by the coaches of top 16 in Champion's league, so expect some fun from the various agendas.

You can't vote for your own players, so gawd knows what Pep will do.

I know what midfield player he will vote for.

tbh, I would really like to win this title, since last time we were outplayed by Sevilla because we weren't sharp. We have to show that we are sharp for this season. I need to see the hunger again.

Don't need your approval turd. I never claimed to be a big shot, but it is a fact that I have spoken to Soriano whether you like it or not. Don't need a pathetic arsehole like you to believe it because I know it for a fact. I have also spoken to Marcos Senna, Charles Gyamfi, Abedi Pele, Yaya Toure and many others and could prove it if I could be arsed to, but Lerd you are simply not worth it. Even spoken to TS hero Heurelho Gomes and could prove it easily. Go back to your patetic little life and leave me to mine. I don't want or need your approval. FU

Other people whose opinions matter more than you - the population of the world - or at least some of them including people on this board know that I am not inventing what I say. They and I know for a fact that I have spoken to Soriano, because I have a recording of it and many others too, so like I said Salute

For me it is...losing so badly to Sevilla last time was disappointing, so hopefully the players make up for it. Shakhtar should be beatable, even if not all our players are fit.

I really want this team to go on and win the World Club Cup, then they will have the amazing achievement of holding all 6 possible trophies at once.

I'm flying out to Nice early in the morning and then going on to Monaco for the Gala awards and Champion's League Draw tomorrow evening.

Europa League Draw and Supercup is day after. Will try to keep you informed if I get time while there and post stuff like I did last year, but it will depend on convenience. No offence but I prefer lounging around on the riviera to this forum unless I can manage both at the same time.

Will be in France for a week and taking in the weekend's big match Marseilles v Bordeaux. Should be a good one.

Some of the results are already leaked. Messi will win best forward and best player overall, while Xavi will win best midfielder. Apparently it was very close between him and Messi for best player.

Then again, this is according to SPORT and MD so they could be wrong Wink

It is isn't surprising the results leak. Onlt the winners have to be at the Gala. People at the Barcelona hotel saw Xavi and Messi leaving, which meant that Valdes and Pique missed out.

    Results:

    Goalkeeper: Edwin van der Sar
    Defender: John Terry
    Midfielder: Xavi Hernandez
    Forward: Lionel Messi
    EFotY: Lionel Messi

UEFA European Club Football Awards 2009 (Explanation)

They vote for their top 3 players, giving 3, 2 and 1 point. They can't vote for their own players, but they are not limited to the top three vote-getters. It is not done by voting on those nominated. For example, Pep didn't have to vote for rivals and his Player of The Year vote is an interesting one as you will see later. The voting panel is the coaches from the top 16 of Champion's League from last year.

    Voting Panel:

    Rafael Benítez (Liverpool)
Paulo Bento (Sporting Clube de Portugal)
    Henk ten Cate (Panathinaikos)
    Sir Alex Ferguson (Manchester United)
    Manuel Jesualdo Ferreira (FC Porto)
    Josep Guardiola (FC Barcelona)
    Guus Hiddink (Chelsea)
    Jürgen Klinsmann (Bayern München)
José Mourinho (FC Internazionale di Milano)
    Manuel Pellegrini (Villarreal CF)
    Claude Puel (Olympique Lyonnais)
    Luciano Spalletti (AS Roma)
    Juande Ramos (Real Madrid CF)
    Claudio Ranieri (Juventus)
    Abel Resino (Atlético de Madrid)
    Arsène Wenger (Arsenal)

Their votes are the same. You don't get more the better you do in the competition. Perhaps you should. Players do not have any say in the voting, so hating players who do better than you think they should is stupid. Messiah, blame the coaches not Kaká.

I'm going to give you all the breakdown of voting, starting with the top threes and points scored for goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, forwards and the European Footballer of the Year.

Pep Guardiola did not have to vote for the main rivals of his players and largely didn't.

You will see that both Messi and Xavi Hernández had large margins of victory, although Xavi had more competition from his own team-mate.

You wil also notice that Andrés Iniesta, Nemanja Vidić and Xabi Alonso received European Fotballer of the Year votes without even winning their category. In Alonso's case he wasn't even in top 3. Check out who voted for these candidates. Guardiola has some excuse for his choices as he couldn't vote for his players.

Most glaring omission is not a single vote for Toure Yaya. What does he have to do to get appreciated?

    Cheers....

I think Wengers votes really illustrates what his Arsenal is always lacking.. Kind of makes you think why he doesnt de anything about it.

Also Pep voting for Chygrynskyy... I guess he was serious about him lol!
