UEFA European Club Football Awards 2009 (Explanation)
They vote for their top 3 players, giving 3, 2 and 1 point. They can't vote for their own players, but they are not limited to the top three vote-getters. It is not done by voting on those nominated. For example, Pep didn't have to vote for rivals and his Player of The Year vote is an interesting one as you will see later. The voting panel is the coaches from the top 16 of Champion's League from last year.
Voting Panel:
Rafael Benítez (Liverpool)
Paulo Bento (Sporting Clube de Portugal)
Henk ten Cate (Panathinaikos)
Sir Alex Ferguson (Manchester United)
Manuel Jesualdo Ferreira (FC Porto)
Josep Guardiola (FC Barcelona)
Guus Hiddink (Chelsea)
Jürgen Klinsmann (Bayern München)
José Mourinho (FC Internazionale di Milano)
Manuel Pellegrini (Villarreal CF)
Claude Puel (Olympique Lyonnais)
Luciano Spalletti (AS Roma)
Juande Ramos (Real Madrid CF)
Claudio Ranieri (Juventus)
Abel Resino (Atlético de Madrid)
Arsène Wenger (Arsenal)
Their votes are the same. You don't get more the better you do in the competition. Perhaps you should. Players do not have any say in the voting, so hating players who do better than you think they should is stupid. Messiah, blame the coaches not Kaká.
I'm going to give you all the breakdown of voting, starting with the top threes and points scored for goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, forwards and the European Footballer of the Year.
Pep Guardiola did not have to vote for the main rivals of his players and largely didn't.
You will see that both Messi and Xavi Hernández had large margins of victory, although Xavi had more competition from his own team-mate.
You wil also notice that Andrés Iniesta, Nemanja Vidić and Xabi Alonso received European Fotballer of the Year votes without even winning their category. In Alonso's case he wasn't even in top 3. Check out who voted for these candidates. Guardiola has some excuse for his choices as he couldn't vote for his players.
