    Madrid Derby Madridderby-1

No offence to Getafe, Rayo, Mostoles, Leganes, or Alcorcon but this is THE big Madrid derby. It's been fairly one sided, just one victory for Atletico in the last 15 matches belonging to this fixture but in a local derby anything can happen (except for Fernando Torres scoring).

    92-93 Atletico 1 Real Madrid 1
    93-94 Atletico 0 Real Madrid 0
    94-95 Atletico 0 Real Madrid 2
    95-96 Atletico 1 Real Madrid 2
    96-97 Atletico 1 Real Madrid 4
    97-98 Atletico 1 Real Madrid 1
    98-99 Atletico 3 Real Madrid 1
    99-00 Atletico 0 Real Madrid 0
    02-03 Atletico 0 Real Madrid 4
    03-04 Atletico 1 Real Madrid 2
    04-05 Atletico 0 Real Madrid 3
    05-06 Atletico 0 Real Madrid 3
    06-07 Atletico 1 Real Madrid 1
    07-08 Atletico 0 Real Madrid 2
    08-09 Atletico 1 Real Madrid 2

Atletico have shown some positive changes under Quique Sanchez Flores and Madrid, finally, have put together a couple of their best performances of the year in the last week against Getafe and Milan.

I have to say this would be a lot more fun if The-Frank-Tavern were still around but anyhow, this match deserves it's on thread!

Match kicks of Saturday night (22:00 CET) from the Estadio Vicente Calderon! cheers

A few memories of this fixture down through the years...

Edit: It was not at the Calderon but at Bernabeu.

Hmmmm....for an Atletico-Real Madrid...the 1-4 from 96-97 (video above) was quite memorable. Especially the quality of the goals (Raul's second, Seedorf, and Victor) and considering Atletico had a man advantage for a most of the game. But I think even better than that was the year before - even in the season (95-96) that Atletico did the domestic double they still couldn't beat Madrid in the Calderon. Winning goal from Super's man crush. Biggrin

1(!) victory in the last 15 matches. I knew it was bad and one-sided, but not that it was this bad and one-sided.

I remember watching the 04-05 and 06-07 matches and Atletico were dominant throughout both. Even more so in the 0-3 loss. They had like 20-4 shots on goal but couldn't get it in.

There's a reason they call them Patetico.

Don't get your hopes up because Quique has just gotten in and I think he will to shore up a truly terrible terrible defence so I don't think Atletico will start out aggressiv but I suppose that since it is a derby it could turn out to be thight and intense. Im more worried about this game then I have been for a long time because if they defend well and sit back then they can do damage on the counter but hopefully they won't.

Well, Quique's teams are usually well organised but the truth is there is only so much you can do if you still have the likes of Pablo out there on the pitch. Only clean sheet Atletico have under Quique so far is their 2-0 win over Marbella (2da B) in Copa del Rey.

That doesn't mean they can't pull out a good defensive performance if they hold a deep defensive line with some protection from midfield. Also derbies can inspire unexpected performances.

True. But Cleber and Assuncao protecting from midfield???? I think there will be goals.

That is why I think he might just add an extra man in midfield to give the backline more protection. He seems to be a pragmatic type and it would be an obvious way of keeping a more defensive balance while letting either Jurado/Simao or both attack if it is a 4-3-2-1. Even if he does play a 4-4-2 then I think it will be thighter then it usually is.

A bit, though he is no Rafa Benitez. Anyhow - look at the XI that he played against Chelsea:

    ----------------------Asenjo

    Perea--------Juanito------Pablo-------A. Lopez

    Reyes-----C. Santana-----Assuncao-----Simao

    --------------Sinama-----Forlan

He rarely deviates from his 4-4-2 so I think we'll see something similar at the very least.

hmmmmm, he has only had 2 weeks with the defenders, he needs about 5 decades to sort that lot out! they might try and keep it tight but id put good money on atletico going one down in the first ten minutes.
