The candidates are Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Samuel Eto'o, Tresor Mputu Mabi and Yaya Toure.

Surely it's got to be Etoo for what he achieved with Barça. Definitely gets my vote.

Unfortunately I think that Drogba has a real chance of winning, simply because this award is based on public votes, and he's a Premier League based-player who is in excellent form right now, which is what will stick in voters' minds.

Who would the EMB vote for?

This season so far it's Drog, but Eto'o for the calender year as he scored in the CL final and had great success with Barca.

Tresor Mputu Mabi I have to confess I am unfamiliar with. He seems to have a stellar goalscoring record, according to wiki. Sounds like someone who will be attracting European teams.

Eto'o should win based on performances / achievements in 2009. But the Drog is a better player IMO...

Im going with Yaya Toure. He has performed very well ever since he came to Barcelona and it is beyond me why he isn't more popular in the boardroom of Barcelona. Anyway regarding his performances he has helped make sure that even in games where Barcelona could be bullied they no longer just fall over and lose. Of course it would be too much to just attribute all that to him but he has been a big factor. Also his performances against Chelsea where he played as a Cb against Drogba and in the Cl final. Also I think Eto actually played THAT well last season despite his many goals. He isn't the same Eto from around 2004.

Based on the whole year Essien is in with a shout but if it is done purely in a Ballon d'or type method then this season doesn't count for much while the first 6 months of the season is defining.

ok About time someone acknowledged his contribution. Very under-rated player that deserves far more recognition for his contribution to the sucess of Barcelona and la Cote d'Ivoire. Also a decent person.

I think the reasons for Drogba are a little undersold here. Sure, there will be a bias from Englsh-centric voters who see more of him, but his record is pretty amazing too. As this football blog on the African Cup of Nations notes, Drogba is responsible for so much of the Ivory Coast's rise up the rankings - they are now favourites to win that tournament, and he deserves a lot of credit for that.

All of that said, I just checked Eto'o's record for last season, and I had no idea he scored 49 goals, to Drogba's 30. That's simply awesome, so fair play Kes. I guess I'm just one of those England-centric fans who isn't fully informed either!

If winner's medals make have any influence at all it has to be Eto'o or Toure. I'll go for Eto'o because on the calendar year he has been better. In fact, Toure has hardly played in this current season while Eto'o is having pretty good success already in Inter.

FFS Axe, stop blaming Koeman for everything!

No Egyptian player deserves to be nominated this time. Al Ahly is in transition and went out early in African Champion's League. Zamalek isn't great either. Hosny abd-Rabou doesn't play in competitive league and they failed to qualify for World Cup. Would have made no difference if they had or win the ACN; none of them deserve to be nominated this time. Last year Aboutreika should have won though.
