African Player of the Year Nominations

The usual suspects: Drogba, Essien, Etoo, Kanu, and Aboutrika of Egyptian club Al Ahli.

What does everyone think - who will and/or should win it? I think Drogba is probably the answer to both, since he went to the World Cup, and has hit good form now when Etoo is injured. Plus he only lost by a single point to Etoo last year, so this is surely his year.

Good shout, but he didn't go to the World Cup, didn't go very far in the Ch. League, and won only the FA Cup. Also (correct me if I'm wrong) he wasn't a fixture in the side like he's been this season.

He's still young, I'm sure he's on course to win in the future at some point.

The only time he wasn't a fixture in the side was when he was injured (which is part of the reason we went out of europe with such a whimper if you ask me. That and the fact that we had no Hyypia and Riise).

I'm not saying he should win it but it's absolutely ridiculous that he's not in there when Kanu is

I myself felt maybe another one or two of the Ivory Coast players could have been in there too. Not sure of specific names, but they gave a more than creditable account of themselves in the World Cup.

the Uefa cup is in the past so that doesn't matter, next year i doubt it he is just feeling pressure to up his game because he is play beside of the best striker in the last couple of years

1. Eto'o
2. Drogba
3. Essien.

This year (2006) Drogba's been outstanding, from about March onwards. Played only against Argentina and Holland at the World Cup, but was still pretty effective for his country, and has been the best striker on the planet since March.

I'd say Drogba 1st and then a battle between Essien and Eto'o for 2nd.

To me, Ghana was the most impressive african team in the world cup.... and it was mostly due to their dynamic midfield, whose performance I would rate as follows:

Appiah > Eissen > Muntari

So Appiah does deserve that recognition.

I agree Appiah was Class can't believe no "big" club came in for him during the summber

I think what might work in Eto'o's favour is the CL win... otherwise I agree that Drog has been right up there...
